Starting problems after replacing clutch.
I had acess to a garage and replaced the clutch with a friend of mine. After she was back together in one peice starting issues began. The motor cranks at about 1200 rpms but doesnt catch, it spudders from 0-1200 rms and backfires. No codes. After cranking for a long time it will eventually catch and run beautiful. I think the starter and MAF are working fine and its some sort of other electrical problem or a bad ground. I replaced the crank position sensor and starter signal fuse. Any suggests or diagnosting tips for my day off tomrrow?

how was the car before... I replaced my clutch and the car turned right on as if it had never had any problems.
I know this is not what you want to hear... but are you sure you bolted everything back together correctly (clutch)

Search this forum for the ground thread. When I did the clutch on my 5th gen, I had the same problem. At first it wouldn't start. But then later it started with the bang, pop, cruch, cough cough etc. starting sounds. Grounding the starter and block with ground cables solved it.

I know of the the main ground wire, from the battery to the block. I guess i could clean off the connection, any other grounds that are easy to get to? This problem has nothing to do with the clutch, the tranny was pulled in order to replace the throwout bearing, the clutch was not touched. Note that she runs amazing once she gets up and goes.

To do the clutch or the throwout bearing, you have to take off the tranny . . . that's where the problem lies - one of the grounding points is the tranny to the motor. Even though you put the tranny back in exactly the same place, you may have the problem.
In my experience, cleaning the grounding points will do absolutely nothing. You will need to add additional ground wires if this is the problem.
