First off do you have any codes? My high idle was due to a faulty TPS.

2K wtf? Your idle is way off. Its supposed to be like around the 750 rpm range. Have you tried adjusting the black plastic idle screw?

Yes, My rough Idle was due to a misfire in acouple of my cylinders. I replaced the coils last week. This really made a huge diffence fixing the sputtering and misfire.
It still didn't feel right at idle so, I bought some Sea Foam and dump two spray paint caps worth into the brake booster. The car is running like I remeber nice and smooth and the power seems to be restored.

well i fixed my idle after changing the coil packs but it still wasn't like before, but i also had your diy ram air and i think that what made the car idle bad. So this morning i put in my oem air box, so then i start it and i'm like oh crap i forgot to plug in the map or maf sensor so did it while it was running, the car like stalled and then ran perfect. Now after getting back in the car the check engine light is on, but my idle is great anyone know what happened?? and i drove it around for like 20mins the engine light remained on but acc feels great and idle is close to if not near perfect but tha damn engine light is on, help me. Do i reset the ECU, i tried disconnecting the battery and the light is still on. So though i fixed the idle ,my engine light is on, lol

I fixed mine after replacing coil pack. Also did the plugs. But mostly was b/c of a bad pack.

Hey Fork,
I also have idle issues with my 99, specially when the car is cold. I usually notice it when I am stopped at a redlight, stop sign etc. It gets very annoying and I am thinking it is the coils, I have an appiontment next week to replace them. Did you figure out what your problem was? I hope that solves the problem.

My idle is somewhat fine. I ran sea-foam, changed all 6 coils, cleaned IACV, cleaned the TB, ran a few diff injector cleaners and everything else i can think of. Sometimes outta nowhere i get a strange vibration that lasts a few seconds. Also when I'm idling and give it some gas (doesn't' matter how much but over 1k) once it falls back down to 1k i get a strange vibration until if falls back down to 700. IDK wtf that's about but the car runs pretty strong. I'm about to add my own 0 gauge grounding kit so i hope that might help some. But I'm close to finding the problem i guess.

It not my coils (already replaced them last winter) and I tried replacing the injector on Friday. Still pulling an 0603 code and idling like a 63 ford pickup. I also have run not one, but 5 injector cleanings through 5 tanks of gas. I cleaned my MAF, new plugs, and IAC. I'm going to try to find a vaccume leak but it still doesn't explain the poor idle or the 0603 code. What else is there for me to replace for an 0603 code? Wiring is next I guess...

my idle is normal i think. after i start it up, allow the engine to drop its idle from 1.5k to >1K i drive and after a few minutes, the idle drops to about 750 or 500. its not a rough idle but i can still feel a slight vibration. will switching to 93 octane and using a fuel injector cleaner really reduce this vibration?

I've replaced coil packs, plugs, all O2 sensors, checked injectors, run seafoam through fuel system and intake. Still idles rough...maybe a busted motor mount? The car runs like a bat outa hell.

So does mine. Roasted a riced out Honda Civic Si-r (must be an auto), Acura TSX, and a Volkswagon Jetta VR6 yesterday.

NcoRacer - I'm starting to think it's a vaccume leak somewhere. Seeing how a majority of those with idle problems who've done the maintenance are having the EXACT same problem, it's got to be something simple and stupid (usually is). If I find it, I'll let you and everyone else know the solution.

^ First of there is no such thing as a Civic Si-r in the United States. Maybe in Canada, but not here. Second the Civic Si to which you are referring to only comes 5MT. Third my friend has one and it's no competition to a maxima. I had about 2 car lengths on him in 3rd around 4k rpm. The other cars would have given you a run for your money so they probably had horrible drivers.

When i had my 99 SE 5spd I had the same problem. I was pulling 3 codes: Multiple Cylinder Misfire, o2 Sensor and Knock Sensor... My car had lost all power and was stalling when downshifting or at stop...i know this isn't exactly your symptopms and I figure my solution is rare but i offer this for information at least...

I did everything from changing coils (twice), changed sparks, cleaned TB, checked IACV, replaced PCV, cleaned injectors, etc, etc, etc and still my idle was way off and performance was extremely compromised... after i gave up on it i took it to 3 mechanics who all wanted to charge me between $500-$1200 to "potentially" fix the problem..no gaurantees...

Finally i brought it to a mechanic that wasn't full of SHEET and he got back to me within 15 mins of me leaving to tell me my manifold gasket had a leak. $15 part + 2 hours of labor and my car was brand new again.

Have them throw one of those smoke machines that check for air leaks in the engine and you may find your problem. I would say i wish i'd done that in the first place but i learned a lot about my car and maintaining cars by doing all the work i did, and it was pretty fun...frustrating...but fun.

Good luck.

NOTE: i just read your thread in detail

I have a funny idle problem. I will start the car in single digit weather and it will go up to 1500 for the first 15-20 secons before lowering below 1000 rpms. Completly normal. I drive the car for 5-10 minutes and park it, put it in neutral and let the cluthc out and it goes up to 2000-2200 rpms. I let the clutch in and it goes down to 1000ish. Also it only does this about every 3-4 days so its not an everyday occurance. It doesn't bother me either, I was just wondering if this is hinting that i may need new coils in the future.

PS - I just bought the car 3 weeks ago. 99 SE 5MT with 108K miles and have no clue if anything was replaced in the engine bay (ie, coils, plugs, injectors,) however it did come with a brand new air filter, so i am really clueless.

Anyone else having these similar problems, help me out. Is beginning to make me wonder....

1999 GXE w/weird idling

I have a 99 GXE and having some weird idling issues at the moment. The SES light is on, even though I'm not sure the code. When I start the car the RPM's sit at 1 or a little above. After driving and stopping at a stop light or stop sign, the RPM's will sit anywhere from 1 to 2. After driving for awhile and putting the car in park, the RPM's will steadly move up to 2.5 to 3. If you tap down on the gas peddle it will rise even higher and very slow to move back down. I have the stock airbox on it now, but in the process of getting the new air intake put on (not cold). Previous owner said I should adjust the TPS and see if that helps. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

this is what i use to fix my idle problems. never had to replave coils and have 200K miles. clean my TB once a month, and only use shell V-power or exxon 93. good luck bro.
