Brake shims necessary??

With all the new advances in brake pads, is it still necessary to use brake shims when replacing the brake pads. I recently bought new Raybestos QS pads and was wondering if I needed to put back on or replace the shims. I have a 96SE.

you should. it's ~$20 or less for a set. lets just not try to save on brakes.

if i were you i would do it just for the sake of it. you may or may not need it, but ive heard that shims help in reducing squeeling when braking, which is what i have as of this moment because i threw away my shims.. some more advice, DO NOT BUY SEMIMETALLIC DURALAST. gl with your change..

Yes you need to use the shims , if you don't the brakes will squeal especially as you let off or barely apply the brakes. Most of the squeal doesn't come from pad to rotor contact but from the vibration involving metal to metal contact. In this case the caliper piston to metal on the back of the pad contact. Shims help reduce this vibration.

I applied anti-squeal to the back of my Porterfield R4-S pads and they haven't squeaked since. No shims.

+1. Anti-squeal will do the trick with or without shims.
