How do you test a MAF sensor

How can you tell if a MAF sensor is bad??

Can you check the voltage across the terminals?? what should the voltage be in this case?

Thanks

The data may vary with different model years, but in 1997, the MAF run as follows:

Terminal 54 (wire color W), engine warm and at idle should read 1.0-1.7V
At engine speed of 2,500 RPM, the signal should read 1.5-2.1V

Terminal 55 (B wire) is a ground and should not show voltage with the engine running.

Terminal 4 (W/B wire) is the ECCS relay with is a self shut off unit, and will actually change voltages. When the engine is just shut off, it will read 0-1V, but after a few seconds will read battery voltage ((11-14V).

Terminals 67 and 72 (wires both R) is ECU power and will read battery voltage when the ignition is on.

I too have this mysterious, sudden MAF failure. Bear with me guys as I am only in my second week of tech school currently. What instrument do I use and what is the proper procedure to obtain the information that will allow me to diagnose the problem more certainly?

B = Black; W = White; R = Red

Two choices: a digital multi meter (around $50 for a decent one) or a Vertonix Consult II (Around $8,000; if you can find one)

When the MAF goes bad on our cars, what code will it throw? I have a problem with mine that very well may be the MAF but the code is Manuf. Control Air/Fuel Metering. It is not exactly MAF specific but that may be the problem. The thing that has me puzzled is that mine continuously throws that code anda Manuf. Control Ign. System or Misfire, and yet the car runs like a top. It may be alittle rich on cold starts but outside of that it runs fine. Any thoughts? Or should I just go buy a MAF and get it over with?

If I was reasonably sure I had a MAF issue, or had one of the several codes it could cause (see an FSM for the list), I'd pull the MAF, clean it with a proper cleaner, reinstall and test it first......................................
