Somebody told me that changing the auto tranny oil is very delicate. In the stickies, I read that I should use the Nissan brand fluid.

Is it really that important that I get the nissan transmission fluid? What a hassle, I really don't know where to get it, specially since I am in Mexico.

Have any of you had problems after changing the transmission fluid?

the reason why we suggest the Nissan Brand Fluid is because it was engineered for Nissan parts, but just about any aftermarket brand will do, but just don't buy ANY cheap named brand, make sure they have some prestige.

API GL-4 is recommended for all Nissan 5/6 speed trannies. Typically, the two best ones to get are Redline MT-90, and the 75W-90 Amsoil. Other gear oils are API GL-5, and they contain detergents that are known to eat away at the brass synchros in our trannies.

Even in Mexico you an get it from a dealership. If there is not one near you, you can get it online. It's not much more difficult than changing oil. It's best to drain the fluid form the pan, then drop the pan and clean it inside. Replace the filter inside and the pan gasket and torque the pan bolts properly.

Where in Mexico are you? I'll be in Matamoros in a few weeks and I could bring the parts and fluid if you are nearby.

if its never been changed or really old...dont change it...if u do i bet ur tranny starts to slip in 2 months

any major brand will do. undo the nut in the pan, let it drain. tighten the nut back. pop the hood and pour the new fluid through where the pranny dipstic goes. after you done, shift the gears back and forth a few times, the start it up, let it idle for 5-10 minutes, then check the level with the dipstick. add more fluid if necessary. i usuall start off with 4 quarts and go from there.

I might be wrong but cant you look at the fluid to tell how old it is? I read it in a thread on here that described what to look for so do a search and look at it. If it looks very old your screwed and changing it will only make the trans die faster.

Wow, dude... that's the coolest thing anybody has said this week regarding my threads on this forum.

Everybody else has nothing better (or more intelligent) to do than just flame me.

I'm in Juarez, across the border from El Paso TX. And I suppose I will be be to handle it just fine with the advise given in this thread by buying a quality fluid at my local Auto Zone.

Autos do come with different gear capacities, I've heard (3,4,5). Is that what you meant?

I have heard the same from knowledgeable people. My personal experinece is different. I used AutoRx on my auto and after I finished the "wash" cycle, I took it to a transmission shop to have it flushed. They have the equipment to pump out all of the fluid, something you can't do easily when you do it yourself. I noticed sharper, crisper shifts with no slipppage or leakage whatsoever. It seems to shift much smoother, especially the hard 1-2 shift our autos have.

As far as the "verterans" flaming you on every post you make, don't sweat it. Many of them are just bitter bastards that think they look cooler to their moron friends by ******* anyone with less experience or knowledge than them, or a differing viewpoint. On this forum you must learn to simply ignore the BS and use all the wealth of knowledge that is available if you can get past the crappy atttitudes or superiority.

Hello, All.

I vaguely remember that my local dealership sells Nissan AT fluid for roughly $6 per quart. Ouch.

Are there other more economical avenues to get my hands on 5 or so quarts of this stuff? I guess the cost of shipping heavy fluid could conceivably offset any savings from purchasing online.

Thoughts/suggestions????

in all reality the fluid change is hit and miss..some members have changed it and their trans started to slip others changed and noticed better shifts...it all really depends on how the tranny was treated by the previous owner if used....if it was driven nice and easy then its prolly ok to change it...if it was raced and beat u might have issues.....and u dont have to use NIssan Fluid any most any ATF is fine......for all we know NIssan D could be an off the shelf brand put in a Nissan bottle

I get my Nissan D matic for ~ 3-4$/qt @ the dealer.

Ask them to give you wholesale.

.. 1st time I changed it (~100k) No difference whatsoever.

2nd time (130k) I noticed better crisper shifts, since prior to, it was lagging in the shift department.

3rdd time I changed it (180+k) ... ...
