Watching recent threads it seems that a tranny rebuild costs about $1200. Unless of course, you take the tranny out yourself in which case it costs $400. That would imply that the cost of removing and replacing the tranny costs $800 labor.

I just got a quote (and remember everything is more expensive here in Cal.) for $600 to replace my clutch. Thats $200 parts and $400 labor to remove the old one and replace the new one.

Why is it twice as expensive to remove a tranny for a tranny rebuild as it is for a clutch replacement?

Dang, that sucks. Go find another place, yeah? I just read your other thread. So u sure it's your clutch that needs to be replaced? Do you think you can remove the tranny yourself?

because on a clutch job its as simple as dropping the trans, changing the pressure plate and disc, and throwing the trans back on. for a tranny rebuild, the trans needs to be dropped, moved to a work bench/table, opened up, diagnosed, repaired, closed up, moved back, and then reinstalled. far more labor and time than just taking it off and putting it back on - thats just exercise.

But the $400 is for taking the tranny in one piece to a shop for them to open up, diagnose, repair, close up.

The $1200 is for all the above and removing/replacing the tranny from the car.

Oh, and $600 was the best of 4 quotes. There's a reason here's called s'cruz!

I'm such a slow poke it'd take me 2+ days to replace a clutch (well that's what it took the last time I did one) It's worth $400 to keep me at work!

i had my auto tranny replaced about a month ago and it cost me around $1,000 and that's including the used tranny (approx. 80k miles) and the labor. i think i read somewhere on this board that its better to get a used tranny than to have one rebuilt. anyways, don't know if this is of any relevance but i just thought i'd share.

Come to LA to get your work done, those prices are rediculous. I bought a clutch off ebay(exedy stage one) for 130 shipped, and payed my mechanic 200 bucks to install it...thats $330....
