Tool to remove the airbag?

Hi All,

I have this annoying rattle sound coming from my steering wheel. I've taken apart my steering wheel with no luck of finding what's loose. I'm pretty sure it's behind the airbag, but it seems like you need a special hex tool to remove it. Does anyone know where I can find the tool? Has anyone ever remove the airbag from the steering wheel?

Thanks for any help,
TJ

You will need to buy a tamper proof torx bit set. I bought mine at Sears. Will cost about $30, which sucks because you only need one and you probably won't use them again. I guess you could buy the set and take it back after you are done. Last time I checked, neither Auto Zone or Advanced Auto carries them. You probably already know, but be sure to unplug the air bag fuse and I think the Haynes manual recommends waiting at least 10 minutes before removal. Very easy to do, once you have the special torx bit.

Thanks whitemax21! Exactly what I was looking for. Did you use loc-tite when you put back in the airbag? It seems like there's some blue stuff (loc-tite? possibly) on there right now. I also found this at Lowes I think this should work, right?

That is what they looked like. When I zoomed in, it looked like the largest size in the set was a T30. I'm not sure what year you have, but I have a '97 and mine uses a T50. That particular set will not work if the largest size is a T30. As far as the loctite, I think it is recommended, but I didn't use any with mine. I think the manual also recommends to replace the torx bolts. I didn't do that either. When I reinstalled everything, I just made sure everything was super tight.

Thanks all for the help. I have a 95 Maxima, so it will probably be the same as the 97 so I'll go get a T50 at Autozone or Napa!

I finally got the torx bit and was able to remove the airbag and find out what was rattling behind there. One of the mounts of the black piece of metal behind the airbag was loose and banging against the bolt in the middle

Does anyone know what that black metal thing is for? I didn't remove i just put some padding in between the metal thing in the bolt in the midddle to prevent them from clanging on each other.
