Muffler Recommendations

So... I have a 95, with 130,000 miles and am still running the original muffler, it doesnt even have much rust actually, but im just looking for something a little better. I'd like something with a little more grunt to it, no rice sound, but something thats also not too annoying to drive daily. I also plan to add a Y-pipe this summer. I was just wondering what brands people prefer or if anyone could offer there own experiences with different mufflers. Pics would be great, because i also dont want one with a tip thats like 4 inches wide. Thanks for any help you can give.

yes... the best one would be from greddy.

other than that i can recomend any B pipe for the added hp and the stock mufler for quiet operation. mabe even add a y-pipe (tho the y-pipe will add alot more sound).

the muffler just adjusts the volume, and rarely gives added performance in the maxima. it may give one or two hp depending on the brand, and if you want it go with greddy (mabe sp2 i forget what its called).

also check out the maxmods website for the applications that will fit your vehicle. its in the stickys... its like maxmods.dyns.com or something (i dunno what the link is but looks something like that).

greddy sp2 catback is the best exhaust for maxima. i dont have one, i just have a cheap ebay muffler with 4" tip. it sounds good, but looks like shizzle. im lookin into gettin a magnaflow muffler this summer, id get the GReddy sp2, but i cant afford it.

friend has a ractive muffler, its not too loud, when you floor it, it has a deep roar kind of sound, not too much HP increase, but looks nice and has a good sound, not TOO loud, but quiet when daily driving.

thanks for the replies. Im not too concerned about hp gains, i know there little if any, im more just looking for a more agressive look and maybe a little better sound, my muffler now is starting to drone a little bit at low rpms and half throttle, i cant afford a whole catback right now so im kinda doing it piece by piece.

Little advice if you put in on yourself, take it to a muffler shop first and have them replace the cat/b-pipe bolts with new ones. Then when you put the new exhaust on you don't have to mess with rusty bolts, and makes the job alot easier.

I put my stock back on. I have a Magnaflow axle back that I can put on anytime I want. It looks good but can be kind of loud sometimes. Depends on what you want to hear...the music while cruising, or the exhaust while running. You could do the axle back as well so you can change it back and forth with your mood. Two 14mm nuts and 3 rubber hangers...takes 5-7 minutes to change.

when my y-pipe was put on, the old stuff was all rusted and they didnt have the nissan connector to the cat and the stock flex was all rusted and broken. they sliced it all off and welded everything on... taking it to a place if its all messed might be a bad idea unless they are going to ask you what to do. they just hacked and sawed without asking me. job was done and it works tho.

I'm just starting to do some easy mods to my '96SE w/ 128k miles. The stealership replaced the b-pipe recently enough that I couldn't justify doing a whole catback system. My muffler's still intact, but the skin is peeling so I want to replace it while the bolts are fairly fresh. I was going to do the Dynomax superturbo/Magnaflow route, but by the time you buy a universal muffler, have the hangers, bend and flange, tip, etc. welded to it you're up to $150-200. (Meineke gave me a ballpark of $100-150 for the parts and labor to make the universal fit the stock B-pipe + the $50 for the muffler.) So, I have a Cattman muffler on the way and should be installing it next weekend. For $300 I'll have a stainless, bolt-on-ready rear section that I could always sell for a couple bills and still not have as much out of pocket. I'm just looking for a little growl and if a few horses come with it, that's gravy. I'll try and remember to come back to this thread as well as posting a sound file in the exhaust sticky.

HKS rear section is very nice and quiet, it looks good and bolts at the stock location and won't rust out. I had one before and it is a really nice design and is very good quality.

okay...now just looking at the name you might not believe me but...
a Cherrybomb turbo II muffler is by far the best. its 19.95, it wont rust, and it sounds cool. it has grunt, but its not a fart, its more a sound of rushing air. ive had one for a year and its awesome. only thing is that you need to get hangars put on and you need to pick your own tip. i liked chosing my own tip, i didnt want a big 4" rice tip, i kept mine small. the whole thing cost me about 75 bux

I just had a Magnaflow put onto my 98 GLE and it sounds GREAT. It's deep and aggressive, but not extremely loud. And it has a nice 3-4 inch tip, ill try to get a picture up tomorrow.

There's an exhaust sound compilation, here's the link http://test.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=465385 . BTW, this is in the stickies. In the future check the stickies first as many common questions have already been answered and collected for others to read.

I don't have a max but i have a 97' I30t and this weekend I finally changed my entire exhaust system. I got headers, and a y-pipe listed for a max off ebay, it was the "Stone mountain racing" company brand. This is the sellers store www.ssautochrome.com he has one up for auction right now. But anyway I also installed a Magnaflow hi flow cat, and muffler and I love the sound. Its not annoying and ricy loud all the time, just when you want it to be when your on the gas or down shifting. I'm really happy with the results.
