Will Crank But Won't Start (99 5Speed)

I stopped at a store tonight to pick up some things and when I came out, my Max wouldn't start. It revved to 2K twice and died, then would just crank, like it wasn't getting gas (have 1/2 tank). It is behaving like it did 3 years ago when someone tried to steal it with a key and the dealer had to reprogram it, so I'm going to have it towed to the dealer tomorrow, unless I get better advice before then.

Thanks

Did you check the ECU for any stored error codes?

I had the same problem before, best bet is to get the dealer to check it to see if the keys need to be reprogrammed, looks like your on the right track, good luck.

No, I was at Wal Mart and reset the ECU trying to pull codes. Sometimes the CEL would come on in the past and the code wouldn't show anything wrong (dealer thought it was my CAI causing the occasional stumbling, which was happening today, but the car never left me stranded like tonight). I decided against having it towed over the mountain to my local station, since they couldn't help the last time this happened. I did sign up for AAA again tonight, just as I did 3 years ago, LOL. I just got paid some $$$ on a loan I made 6 years ago and was putting the car into the body shop for some work, hope this doesn't delay that (again).

My car did the same thing. I had to get the key reprogrammed. My spare key did turn on the car for me. If that doesnt work then your fuel pump may have died.

ECU Reprogrammed?

Dealer reprogrammed ECU for $90 - Lynnes Nissan West in Stanhope, NJ. When this happened 4 years ago, the selling dealer (in Flemington, NJ) took care of it for free. I had the 100 point check (free), plugs done, injectors/TB cleaned (both of which I had planned for June), fuel filter (had this done 22K ago, service advisor mentioned it, but then checked records and said I didn't need it yet, but I figured might as well get it done now). Then he mentioned "gas in the oil, did I crank it a lot?" and suggested engine flush and oil change. I just had a Mobil One O/C 2 months ago, but I fell for it and got it done ($99 with oil change). I did get 10% off on everything as per their WEB Special, but am not sure I will use them again. Total Damage $586, plus the AAA Tow of $32. Ouch!

Car runs GREAT though. When I had the plugs changed and injectors cleaned, it was piecemeal, not at the same time and didn't notice any difference, but that's not the case now.

Did get the car to misfire once on WOT; Service Advisor from 2 years ago suggested it was the CAI and I believe that is the case, so will go back to MonsterFlow Filter next week. I started experiencing this after changing to a
"Popcharger/MonsterFlow" GD a couple of years ago.

Off to body shop in a week, will skip the trunk repaint ($230) to compensate for my expense here. Just will get done what insurance covers from someone backing into me (LR 1/4) and hood/RF Fender (from an egg thrown on Mischief Night 2004!). Then new tires the week after; will probably go with Falken Ziex 512 or the Avons to get budget back under control. I was thinking of the Goodyear F1's, but the Falkens are about $320 shipped from Edge Racing, Goodyears about $600 from Sam's Club or the Tirerack. The Falkens were good tires, more comfortable than the Firestone SH30's with comparable handling, but sub 30K mile wear, maybe 25K.

84,750, all of them "mine", LOL. Bought car new in April 99 for $18,250! Shouldda bought 2 of them, LOL.

1st did plugs @ 32K, Injectors @ 42K; by 60K, had all of 60K svc done except PCV. Now all is done again, so hopefully I'm good through 144K, which at my current rate of mileage should occur sometime in 2011, LOL.

Sounds like the classic 99 immoblizer problem. Tow to dealer and have keys reprogramed.

Yep` that's what it was. If it only happens every 4 years, I'm OK with it.

Is this a problem with all 99's. Cause I'm working on a friend's car and it's doing the same thing. I had the car in my posession for about two weeks which it was fine. Then the code for the Knock sensor came up. I changed it and ever since it's been giving trouble to start. It just cranks and cranks. It's got spark fuel and I'm sure compression. Any ideas? Do you guys think the the key dropped the program??

'll bet you guys know that you can program the keys yourself but if thatn isnt the problem check the engine ground going to the battery my car cranked and didnt start and they said the ground was poor so the computer and starter wasnt getting enough voltage to run.

It can't be done without Consult II.

yes, but he said he reset his ecu at walmart. If he did that, the code goes away but the problem stays!

Well technically, if the problem still exists. It doesn't go away. It stays pending with the CEL off. If the ecu continues to see this over a period of predetermined starts, then it logs the code and throws the light on.

Well anyway after fighting with the car for 3 long hours yesterday it finally started. I drove it around and it drove fine. No light or anything, but even then it still hard starts. Now this morning AGAIN!!! same thing, it's just cranking and cranking. Plugs get wet with fuel, then i have to clean them and start the process all over again. This is very frustrating. Is there anything I am missing as to why this car won't start when cold and hard starts when hot? I'm willing to try anything at this point.

I have a 1995 maxima and the mechanic seems to think that I need a new computer. got the computer, now he thinks it needs another ignition switch. you turn the key, it won't start up. first I thought it was the fuel pump, not the problem...any suggestions?
