Automatic Transmission problem, takes long to shift ??
The car takes a long time to shift from first gear to second, and the rpms go up to about 3500, which is only in the first 10 minutes of driving the car. After the 10 minutes the problem stops. Also the other day, the car was locked into second gear and wouldnt swich at all, no difference when putting the car into 1st gear either. Please help !!

I'm not a transmission expert but I've had similar problems.
I believe locking in 2nd gear is a design feature, commonly known as "limp mode," allowing you to drive from whereever you are to a repair shop.
Problems I've had include:
- Clutch material starts to come apart, clogging up orifices. This requires taking apart the transmission, cleaning it, and replacing the torque converter assembly, I think.
- Valve body or control body valves stick. If you are very handy, this can be pulled out, disassembled, and cleaned.

i was having similar problems and had to get a rebuild. after a while it just wouldnt want to shift out of first until 3500 rpm's. on the highway it started slipping alot and that is when i decided it was time to get it fixed. it ended up being a bearing that failed due to nissan not allowing enough oil to get to it. the guy that rebuilt mine said he drilled a larger hole for the oil to go through and prevent the problem in the future. hopefully this isnt your problem but i would get it checked out to be safe.

How often do you drain/replace your fluid and filter?
If it hasnt been done in some time it may be a good idea. If you havent been religious in the past about your fluid changes it may be a good idea to get a power flush done. Then wait a week and get the fluid drained and the filter replaced.
If you are lucky and it is just broken down fluid and not broken down friction materials then this may get you a few more miles. If the friction materials have begun to break down find a good shop for a rebuild.

maybe the solenoids in the transmission. Im no tranny expert but i know good matinence + a tranny cooler will help savor the original transmission... I have a stage 2 VB with tranny cooler and flushed it every 15k im now on 180k with no signs of any problems *knocks on wood*

Oh and the limp mode on these cars puts it into 3rd gear. If you have a service manual, you can check the transmission codes via the overdrive light, but it is VERY tricky, the thing flashes so much so quick that it is next to impossible to tell the code.
