Transmission/Clutch problem

OK so I am having a problem with my transmission. Can't put it into ANY gear without shutting it off and starting it back up in the gear. The clutch pedal is soft and goes to the floor but comes back up. It barely starts in first but will start right up in R. I used to have a noise inside that one guy said was the throwout bearing and now with this problem the noise is gone. Is it that or something else?

Either your clutch is gone or the hydraulic system that activates it needs help.
Start by checking the clutch master & slave for leaks and bleeding the system. If the clutch still doesn't disengauge, you probably need to have the clutch replaced.

Sounds like a throw out bearing to me, or hydraulic failure/leak. You can check to see if your throw out bearing is intact by viewing it through the shift fork boot (remove the boot) and use a flashlight to see if the throw out bearing is sitting on the fork properly or see if one of the "ears" broke off the bearing. First check your clutch reservoir to make sure you have fluid in it.

The shift fork is on the transmission bell housing and has a little rubber boot around it that you can remove.

Thanks for the input guys. There is fluid in it, thats about all I was able to check because it is so fukcing cold out but my car is off the road now anyway and it will be going through some changes anyway so would it be better for me to drop the tranny anyway? I am thinking I will just drop it have it rebuilt or at least new gaskets seals etc.

Check it first through the shift fork boot to make sure the throw out bearing is broke. If that is the case then you will have to remove the transmission to replace it. You do not need to rebuild the trans, so I would not have it rebuilt just because it needs removal. Can you give us a little info on what clutch you have, how many miles on it, how many miles on the trans? This would help.

The car is at 216K the tranny was rebuilt at about 185 or 175 with the clutch replaced then. I mean when you think about it depending on the clutch I guess it could be going especially if it was 175 then that is 40K on a clutch.

Check the fluid...! This usually means your slave cylinder needs to be bled...

I am still going to go with a bad throw out bearing, check the cheaper first(T.O.B.). 40,000 miles on a clutch is not much at all unless you abuse the clutch. Who replaced the clutch the last time? I am ASSuming that the throw out bearing was replaced as well when the clutch was replaced. Also if the throw out bearing is an aftermarket bearing this could be reason for failure, as many on the board have experienced failure of the T.O.B. at low mileage, myself included.

The guy that owned the car before me had the transmission done. I have a folder around somewhere saying what was done but I can't find it right now. I don't know if it said TOB but you would think it would get done. This is what I figured was wrong so I will take your suggestion and look into it
