Who changed it/checked it last? What was the status?

Are you sure you didn't drive it shortly before?

P0138 = 0510
Diagnostic Trouble Code 0510 points to a problem with the Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor. This sensor is mounted in the exhaust stream, just downstream of the Catalytic Converter. When the two Front Heated Oxygen Sensors are operating properly the Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor is not used for engine control operation. It is used to monitor the condition of the Catalytic Converter. If either or both Front Sensors fail the Engine Control Module uses the signal from the Rear Sensor to maintain a correct fuel/air mixture.

DTC 0510 is detected when the signal from the Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor does not reach the expected maximum voltage threshold value. The possible causes include ...
- Harness or connectors (the sensor circuit is open or shorted.)
- Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor
- Fuel pressure
- Fuel injectors
- Intake air leaks

P0325 = 0304
Knock Sensor

If you had even bothered to do a "Find" for 0138, or 0325 you would have found them both.

Hello everyone.

First off - apologies for the thread hijack. I just registered and cannot start new threads until replying to 15. Plus, the search function is disabled. So rather than spam 15 threads, I figured just I'd hijack one with my questions.

I own a WRX which I do most of the maintenance work and some mods on, but I know nothing about Nissans.

A friend has a 1999 Maxima SE which has recently begun having a bunch of problems and I'd like to help him out to (a) make sure he is not getting the runaround from the dealer, (b) do some work with/for him and save some money.

Any input from gurus here would be much appreciated.

1. Does this sound typical for a ~70k mile 1999 maxima?

Spark plugs replaced at 60k service
1 month later, CEL. Dealer replaces all 6 coil packs $600!
Couple months later, CEL again
Dealer replaces front O2 sensor and battery (last week)
Today, CEL again.

This time I'm going over with my ODB scanner to read it first.

2. Where can I get the official Nissan shop manual for this car?

If not possible, is the haynes manual for the maxima any good? Never used a non-manufacturer manual before.

Thanks in advance!

The FSM link above doesn't work - can you repost? ( I can't send PMs yet either apparently)

( EDIT: ok, worked it out, got it - Thankyou! )

Any comments on the problems I described - sound common for the car and age?

Thanks.

Why shouldn't he believe the dealer? And it seems everything he's posted that the dealer did was nothing unusual, especially for a 99.

60K service - nothing unusual about that
Coil packs, well he's got a 99 and we all know about coils and 99's.....
O2's go bad - nothing strange about that either

Doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinary there, he may have paid a premimum, but I doubt he got ripped off.

Tell your friend to join this site and look around. We can save him some money with some very helpfull DIY maintenance items and how to's.

My mistake, he has an '00, purchased in 99. So I guess I'm in the wrong forum now....

Pulled the codes today - 171 and 174 - lean condition both banks.

Took back to dealer since they just changed the front O2. They said the MAF needed changing. Since they agreed to do it for parts cost only, went ahead.

I hope thats the end of it. Need to find a good independant shop.

EDIT: any pointers to the 5th gen Nissan FSM?

Thanks.
