Check engine light came on
So I'm driving my 96 gle with 76k miles and all of a sudden check engine light comes on. The car hasn't had spark plugs changed at all, could that be the reason? If not what else?

Just check the codes and come back and tell us what you found

Regardless of what codes you might have, you should probably be changing those spark plugs before the winter depending on where you live and how cold it gets.
I still have the OEM plugs in at 61,400 miles and they're good to go. I have mostly highway miles and am a believer that the OEM laser platinum plugs are good for more than 60K. Mine came out last March and were cleaned up on a wheel and looked to be in good shape at that time. The engine still runs like new.
You should at least remove a spark plug and take a look at it. The longer they remain in place, the tougher they are to get out sometimes.
You might as well replace the PCV valve while you are at it.
