EGR Valve

Hey all,

I'm trying to fix my idle misfiring problem which I have posted on here many times about. Now I want to check/replace/maybe clean my EGR valve. I have a 99 max, and I was wondering where in the engine compartment my EGR valve is? (the Hayne's book has the completely wrong picture in it). Also is it possible to clean this valve, or is a replacement necessary? Thanks a lot in advance.

As a little background on this problem, the engine begins to misfire occasionally(once or twice a week) while idling(usually in heavy traffic). Things I have done so far:

Re-checked gap on spark plugs
checked ignition coils with multimeter
replaced all O2 sensors
cleaned IACV
cleaned throttle body
checked resistance of fuel injectors

If anyone can think of any other things I should look at besides the EGR, let me know.

Sincerely,
Erik

Look straight down below the throttle body. Yes, you can clean the EGR, but also clean the tube that goes up to the back of manifold. The Haynes manual has another section for the EGR on 99 Maximas, as it was changed for 99 models. I did not get a misfire from EGR and pipe being clogged......just SES light.

Could somebody tell me what the CEL code is for a EGR Valve. Also, how difficult a job is it to change the EGR Valve?

Thank you.

A clogged EGR valve will not cause misfires. The EGR only exists to cut down on the NoX emissions. Misfires are always fuel/spark related. Do you have a CEL? Good resistance with a coil doesn't necessarily mean that the coil is good. If you get infinate or zero resistance with a coil, you definately have a problem though.

Well I just took off the intake manifold and replaced the lower plenum ( lower intake manifold) with a fed spec. No more butter fly valves in the lower intake! The idle issue is now gone and the car responds much better. I am still getting some sluggish feel and hesitation and jerking for the 1st ten minutes of driving. I did not have any codes before I did the work. I would sometimes get exhaust smell in the car while driving. Im thinking the pre cat that comes on the 99 may be clogged or not flowing correctly. I sprayed the egr line with brake cleaner but did not take it off. Keep in mind I have been boosted for awhile. I think not having a cat may have messes with the precat. After it warms up the accelerating hesitation is gone but still exist some upon slowing eown in gear like air is not flowing freely. Just put new clutch in sat so have not got on it hard yet

if your idling roughly chances that the celenoid is busted and stuck open or closed u can try to replace the celenoid first or just replace the egr valve.
