Who actually has the original tires?
I see inside my center console that my Maxima had factory tires of 205-55-15 while I actually have 205-65-15.
I put one of the smaller ones just to see what it looks like and it seems tiny.
What is the difference in performance between a higher or lower (flatter design) tire on the same rim size?
I figured the smaller tire on the same rim seems a bit lighter and gives better gas mileage.... or something.

i'm running the same size... 215/55-16 and my tires are AWESOME in the rain and should be really good in the snow, too.
for technical questions, check out tirerack's Tech Center: http://www.tirerack.com/about/techcenter.jsp. they've got some good info there.

i got a 97gle with 205/55 on steel rims. my owners manual lists the 215/55 but i think thats on the se with the aluminum rims. the owners manual also gives the size of the steel and aluminum rims and they are different, the aluminum rims are wider.

Wow i would be scared of those man, tires have a life of 7 years usually.

The furthest from home I will likely be in the Maxima in the next 6 months is about 25 miles and I have BCAA. I have a foul weather car for inclement weather and longer jaunts in the winter, eg. skiing at Whistler.

Tires with no grooves: Excellent grip on dry ground. I wouldn't drive in wet pavement, though.

on dry roads there lovely, but in sharp corners, a little bit of understeer. On water, I hydro'd waay too much.
The origianl tires have been layed to rest, and Kuhmos have taken their place.

runnin 205/65-15 toyos on stock honeycomb aluminums. i bought the car this year with the tires almost new. AWFUL tires, and wearing REALLY fast. very very unhappy with them.
reasoning:
they are wearing way too fast
they suck in wet weather... loads of tire spin with minimal gas applied from a stop
even in dry weather i slide when taking some corners agressively
they are so big and squishy it makes it feel like driving on jello. (especially with GXE suspention)

Oh, I almost forgot. Mine are Avon Tech M500 215/55ZR16--AWESOME tires for the money (I think they're like $70 apiece at tirerack, although that's for the W-rated version). I also believe this is stock size for a '97 SE.

Bought my Max new in 1997, the car had some sort of Toyo tires on it, cant recall what they were? Does anyone else ? If so post up.
Wore those out and put on some Michelins, then Kumho Supra 712's, then on to Toyo Proxes T1S, and now at present Toyo Proxes T1R. But I also have a set of wheels with some Bridgestone Potenza GIII's. Been swaping them off and on.

I have 215/55/16 on mine but plan to move to the 225/50/16 on the next go round'.
Did you notice any major shift in ride quality? Probably not enough to worry about I'm guessing.
