Oil Change At 140K, which to use?

i went to pep boys, the indian guy behind the counter told me some bull**** about why i should be using 10-40 instead of 10-30 because my maxima has high mileage, it kind of made sense, should i listen to him or use the 10-30

Agreed. 5W30 dino juice. I use Castrol GTX--if you search the web, you'll see it's pretty highly rated. Get it at Pep Boys for $1.39 net.

If you lift your hood and you see a Mobil 1 decal from the factory, then I'd definitely refill with synth. But our Maximas do not require it. And at your mileage, I would not switch. Synth lacks mineral spirits which your well-used motor is used to (its seals that is).

If you did an AutoRX routine (see bobistheoilguy.com), you might be able to switch to synthetic at your mileage, but I would be inclined to stick with Castrol GTX 5W30. I hate to agree with Frank Fontaine, lol!

no, read your owners manual, it is NOT 10w30. I run 5w30 full synthetic at 110K, been running it since 88K, no problems, doesn't burn. Tough one of my stupid spark plug tube seals has started leaking a bit. I need to get around to tearing my engine apart.

They gave me the same line, because of the miles (125k). I have been using 5-30 for 4 years with no engine problems or oil burning so I declined. They charge more for a "high mileage oil change" which I suspect is the real reason they tried to upsell you.

I'll second that. The purpose of synthetic oil is to prevent deposit buildup in your engine in the first place. If synthetic oil hasn't been used since the car was new then it's just a waste of money to switch to synthetic now because the deposits are already in your engine. Therefore there's nothing left to prevent if they're already there... so in your case stick to your standard Shell motor oil or whatever you use now

thanks for the support. its true about switching and what not, however, its not because of the **** already being in the motor. its because of the seals that have been made and maintained for the life of the car being broken down with a different oil, resulting in loose seals, leaks, and possible reduced protection. i cant emphasize enough the importance of protection...

5W-30 Motor oil is what you should be using.

I would go with non-synthetic, Castrol GTX is probably the better choice. Why? Because as long as you continue to change the oil regularly, you will see no difference using the synthetic over the non with as many miles as your engine already has. No difference at all.

Also, people tend to see the leaks after switching from synthetic to non synthetic oil. Synthetic oil tends to clean everything out a bit better. This means that the gunk that is filling in gaps in gaskets, etc gets cleaned out and oil leaks through in small amounts. If you do end up switching to synthetic, plan on using it every time you change the oil from here on.

Yes, at $1.39/qt. Castrol GTX 5W30 is an awesome motor oil. Spending the money on Mobil 1 just isn't worth it and there will be no benefit that a Maxima owner will actually see or observe. But again, if a car came filled with Mobil 1 from the factory, I would continue to use Mobil 1 and bite the bullet on the cost.

With your engine getting older us 10w-30. 5w-30 is good also but if you were say under 100K. You can switch to synthetic, but be prepaired to take care of oil leaks as its a possibility it might happen.

If you were further south, perhaps 10W30 would be a viable alternative, but living in New York you should probably go with 5W30 which is what Nissan recommends in the owner's manual. Do not use 10W30 in the fall and winter.

If you use the oil weight recommended my the manufacturer and the package has the has the API certification on the label you shouldn't have any problems. Most advertising is just hype.
my 2 cents

I think 5 30 is for newer cars, I use 10 30 for my 95 all year around with 112k miles and runs good, imo.

Well, 5w30 is more better for cold winters as it's not as thick as 10w30. I run 5w30 year round.
