A write-up would be great on this. Id be interested in doing a different gauge cluster setup whether it was a 00 or 02-03. I like the newer ones better then my 95 gxe one. Im gonna be doin some junkyard hunting soon and if theres a good writeup on it ill try and snag one thanks it looks great man!

This is a mod that IMHO is not worth it unless you are doing a 3.5 swap w/ 02/03 ecu.

If you are not doing the swap, the following things will not work in your gauge cluster:

1. No engine coolant temperature display . The type of input used and the operating voltage range are different between 4th gen and 02/03.

2. No fuel consumption display - to calculate MPG, the cluster requires the real time fuel consumption from the ecu. This output does not exist on the 4th gen ecu, so you will only see a blank display.

3. "Soft" speed limiter at about 80 mph. This one was unexpected.
By "soft", I mean you can get past it if you are accelerating at a decent rate. It has something to do with the vehicle speed output from the cluster to the ecu. After swapping gauge clusters, I noticed that if I log vehicle speed through the OBD-II port, the recorded speed is 4X what the indicated speed is on the speedometer.
I never tried clipping the vehicle speed input to the ecu to see if that will eliminate this issue.

Currently, the cluster (and engine) are out of the car. The next time I start it up, all of the above issues will be gone.

Others were saying that this would work with a 00 cluster though is the installation pretty similar?

00/01 use the same type of thermal transmitter for coolant temp as the 4th gen so you would not have the problem that I experienced with the 02/03.

There is no fuel consumption display in the 00/01 so you would not have that problem either.

The three electrical connectors are the same for 00 thru 03 so you still need to get those.

Also, I would think that because the 00 thru 03 all share the A33 chassis, the gauge clusters would have the same mounting points. Having never seen a loose 00/01 cluster, I cannot say this for a fact.

What kind of glue did you use to attach the polyurethane brackets to the cluster? Where did you buy the polyurethane (what other suggestions do you have about the polyurethane)?

I made a large mold which encompassed the entire front half of the gauge cluster. The brackets were molded right to the cluster.

I heavily scored the bracket attachment points on the cluster with a dremel before putting the cluster in the mold. I brushed on three thin layers of polyurethane construction adhesive into the mold cavities for the brackets; allowing it to dry thoroughly between coats. The remaining voids in the bracket cavities were filled with regular 5-minute epoxy.

Once everything was dry, I cut the mold off and cleaned up the shape of the mounting points a little with a dremel. The last step was just drilling a hole through each bracket for the mounting screws.

gear display in 2001 cluster to work with 4th gen

It's been a while, Eng92 Im doing the 2001 cluster swap in my 4th gen. Do you know if I would need the PSN switch from the 2001 max to get the gear diplay in the cluster to light and display the gear im in? Or can I just tap into the Inhibitor switch in my 97 to signal the 2001 cluster to light each gear position. Im AUTO btw.

Therefore the circuitry is not built in to the 02/03 cluster to convert the sensor resistance into a voltage that the gauge can display.

I am thinking about doing this cluster swap into a 4th gen and was wondering, everything should be functional and is a matter of splicing wires except for the water temp and trip display on the 4th gen ECU?

I know the gas mileage meter probably won't happen, but I was thinking, we know the 5.5gen cluster's temp gauge won't work off the independent auto a/c / temp gauge sensor in the 4th and 5th gen. But what the one that the ECU uses? What if a wire was tapped into that signal that goes to the 4th gen ECU and then ran to the 5.5gen cluster? Would that work or is the ECU's temp sensor completely different as well?

not gonna work. you can use the 2000/2001 maxima or the I30 which im using. the A33 B's set up is too dependent on the ECU in order for this mod to be worth the time. A33 A's are closer to the A32 .

Bummer, I love the silvery color of the 5.5 cluster. Speaking of which, I was just looking for clusters on ebay and I came across this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-01...#ht_2413wt_903

It just says 00/01, but I noticed it is a 5th gen cluster but silvery like the 5.5. Is this one an AE cluster? Does anyone know if Anniversary Editions got different clusters than the rest of the 5th gens?

Looks just like mine, minus the gear selector.

I have the exact same cluster from a 2001 and mine is the AE. It has the silver gauges just like in the pic. Extremely cheap price but if you are looking on doing the cluster swap you will need the plug in the back of the cluster, this one doesnt show them in the pic. Make sure you get one that includes the plugs with enough wire to tap into.

Awesome, I think I will keep my eye out for a 5th gen at the junkyard and cut the harnesses for the cluster out and then try to get the AE cluster.

Does anyone know if the 5th gen cluster requires that you make a mold for the bottom mounting points like the 5.5gen cluster?

I believe you will have to break off the bottom mounting tabs from your 4th gen cluster and epoxy them to the 5th gen cluster. take a look, theres a thread about installing a 5thgen cluster in a 4th gen by Tavarish. He didn't use the top mounting tab.

2001 AE cluster swap in 97 max

Does anyone know if there is a way to add an ambient sensor to the 2001 cluster that will display temperature in the digital display? Im working on the 4th gen to 5th gen cluster swap. Also has anyone tried enlarging the the opening of the lighting bulb holders to 194. I know MetalMaxima has soldered on the 194 bulbs but Im looking on just enlargening the hole and use the 194 bulb and holder so its just plug and play.

I've a 97 with manual odometer. Can I replace it with a gauge that has a digital odometer without modifying any wiring? I saw this blacked-out gauge from a much later model JDM A32 Cefiro.

I dont think anyone with Analog 4th gen cluster has done this yet. Im in the process of doing mine. Im using a 2001 AE cluster so I guess I will be the first if I get it to work. I wish people that have done this would help out. I guess its just a matter of comparing the diagrams for the digital odometer and sending the correct wires on the 2001 cluster to power and ground. However you will loose the ability to use cruise control since the 4th and 5th gen ASCD operate differently. Can anyone contest this?
