My bose headunit is on its last dying breath, I will try the resistor repair this weekend, but I have my doubts. I am looking to make a replacement with an aftermarket system but with low $$$ seriously in mind.
Has anyone actually just replaced the headunit, installed that doubledin adapter or whatever? Im a little curious on what exactly needs to be replaced. I am not looking for the best sound ever, just a working cd player so I can sell the car without getting raped.
The stickies were a little confusing to me on this topic so I am looking for experienced adivce on it.
By the way, I think that you'll fare better selling it with the stock BOSE. That's the way it usually goes, mods will decrease the value/desireability of the vehicle.
You can get the dash turbo kit which makes that big hold into a normal looking dash.(20$) you need the wire harness (20$) and an antenna adapter (15$) after that its pretty much a simple radio install..
if you agree with sbddude and want to replace your hu im gettin a pioneer deck installed tomorrow, so i'll be taking my bose out and sellin it hopefully. PM me if you're interested- i'll cut ya a deal
Im just sellin the max because I am looking to buy a newer one, then a few weeks in to selling it the damn cd player stops working so its just a hassle I am trying to get over.
Im going to try the repair this weekend then i will consider the aftermarket stereo, or maybe RicoSuave's bose...

If the Bose speakers are still good you can get a Scoshe adaptor from Crutchfiled that lets you adjust the gain from the aftermarket head unit of your choice. They also have a kit that will fill the extra space with a CD strage compartment if you you use a single DIM head unit. I've got a Pioneer head in mine with the orginal bose speakers - sounds great! With out the adaptor you can't use your Bose speakers. The adaptor is about $50 and the DIN fill kit is another $15. Another option is to pickup a used factory double din on Ebay. There are several there now - you might score one of those for $50-70.

With regard to the Bose systems, what size is that little compartment under it? Is it a standard of some sort or should I go measure it. I would like to mount an LCD in it's place and have seen that done but want to be sure on dimensions/specifiations before I go ordering parts.

You can put just about any DIN receiver in the bottom compartment. The compartment comes out and there a holes in the metal bracket to mount the DIN head unit.

Well I think I know what caused the cd player to die. Im buying a resistor to repair the display problems, and see if that magically helps out the CD ERR problems as well. Damn retards that bought the car new, who the hell drops change in their cd slot!!

A three-year old drops coins in the CD slot - mine did and thats why I had the get a new head unit. Never let a toddler "play" in your car!!! The CD player stopped working.
yea, i finally changed my Bose System when i got fed up and couldnt get them repaired at a fair price. Now i'm working with a JVC HU, Pioneer 260Watts, Two Amps (Sony Xplod and Alphasonics 700 W and 1000 W respectively, and Kicker L7 Subwoofers) It sounds great. I'm glad i got rid of mine...but then again, i'm not selling my Max :-)

I agree. I just changed out my Bose HU for a Clarion HU (go here to see a picture..http://www.clarion.com/usa/products/.../ADB340MP.html )
I also used a Scoshe adaptor. The install was very straightforward and th eonly thing to remember is that the AMP remote MUST be wired as well since EACH SPEAKER has an AMP on it. Basically, you should not have ANY loose wires when you're done. The nice thing about HU is that it has everything the Bose had and a little more. And it fits. I'll try to post a pic if I can...
As far as the Schoshe adjustment goes, I am getting it in the mail tomorrow. Am I going to have to tweak the dials on the schoshe at all? and what am i going for?

$50-70..................Not quite. If you get one for less than $100 your lucky. If you want it on eBay, they sell at about $120.

The instructions tell you how to adjust the 4 gain screws - you adjust them equally. You have to do it by ear - I ran longer speaker wires and I put my adaptor below the ashtry (left it out a few days) so I could have easy access to the screws to fine tune. You could put it near the ecu also. I just hate the idea of pullingthe whole dash apart to make adjustments. I adjusted it maybe twice - sounds great and haven't thought about it since.
If i remeber correctly you set voulme on the head unit to about 2/3 max then equally adjust gain scews +(clockwise) until you hear destortion then back it off a little. I was a little conservative here - since I couldn't stand how loud it was I stopped about half way. Didn't want to blow my Bose speakers.

If I have to take the HU out, I can make adjustments to the Schosche without pulling it back out...I also am using the Bose speakers. There is a small improvement in definition with this head unit and the adaptor. The Bose head unit had a "warm" sound to it. The Clarion has more sparkle..

I agree, my Pioneer head unit sounds much crisper than the factory Bose unit- amazing even though it going though an adaptor to Bose speakers
is there a good way to to use the head unit and aftermarket speakers if the oppposite can be done?-my HU is fine, but the speakers could be better

I don't know of a good way to use the factory Bose head with aftermarket speakers. Each speaker has its own amp attached - and the signal conversion would be a PITA. Gotta go the other way or no way other than an aftermarket head, front and back amps, and aftermarket speakers. I was surprised how much better my Bose speakers sounded with an adapted aftermarkert head unit.
The scosche is what I have in my 99 maxima and it works great. Go to crutchfield and do a search on your car. They will tell you everything you need for it.
My 97 Maxima's Bose head unit's volume control is shot. I checked ebay, various sites, and called around town and it seems that a replacement in good condition costs $120 -$150 + shipping. Does anyone have advice as to what good options may be out there for replacing the head unit w/ an aftermarket one for a total cost under this, including PAC and antenna adapters? (AUX out or USB would be nice). Money is tight, and I would like to have sound...
Or should I wait a few months until I have more $?
