Gas cap release lever

Have any of you guys experienced any problems with your gas cap release lever in the car? Today I was unable to open the gas cap with the lever. I had to have my fiancee pull on the lever, while I slid my key into the gap in the gas cap and pry it open!!!

It feels as though the cable (if it is in fact cable operated) has stretched or something... does this sound familiar to anyone?

never heard of that happening but maybe the cold has taken a factor on it.

or has there been other days that were just as cold and the lever acted fine?

It's probably not the cable. This has happened to a number of cars at work. It's usually the "spring" that pops it open. It's not really a spring, just something that makes the door pop. I've never looked at mine, but just try to find out what hits (or should hit) when closing the door.

This is the first year that it has done this. It is a little "stubborn" in the summer too... but today I couldn't even get it open with the lever! It has been exceptionally cold here over the last week and a bit.

I am afraid that one day when I really need gas, I will not be able to open the gas cap! lol... what can I do?! Is there even anything to take apart and examine/replace???

Hit the hinges of the gas door with some grease! This happened to me; the hinges rusted frozen.

It was a real PITA to deal with; I ended up buying a new door and having it painted because I destroyed my hinges trying to open it.

If you want to take the door off, you can; there are (3, IIRC) screws holding it on.

You have to pull up on your gas lever? I push down...then again my trunk release requires me to pull up on the same lever.

(no trunk release button)

Yep, pull up on the gas lever by the bottom-left side of the seat. my trunk pop is a button on the door handle... (and a button on my factory remote)

I will try to grease all the contact points for the gas cap release... also today is a warmer day (high of -4c) so I will try to see if it pops today.

Just to clarify, it was my hinges that siezed up, not my contacts.
