How to install CAI (BOMZ intake)? in 96

I bought this intake on ebay: for my 1996 Maxima se

I tried to install it today but I encountered 3 problems.

1. The metal piece that attaches to the throttle body has spots for 2 hoses to connect, but the hose nearest the windshield is bent to reach the stock airbox. The shape of the hose prevents it from connecting to the metal tube.

2. The metal BOMZ intake has a circular large hole in one of the pieces. I think its for the yellow temp sensor, but the sensor is oval shaped and screwed into the stock airbox. How does that work?

3. WHERE is the INTAKE supposed to go????? It seems like I have the wrong CAI kit because the battery is right in the way of everything... am I missing something here? Do i have to cut the metal fender? Wouldnt the tire hit the intake filter or if not, it would be very dirty down in the wheel well do they really want me to put the air filter through the metal under the hood? Where could this even be installed at a body shop?

Wow thats a lot of work to install an intake, especially at the rate the mechanic charges. Your in Brooklyn right? Would you be interested in meeting up and doing my intake installation and ill pay you?

wtf? all you do is just take out screw from the throtle body that holds the rubber around the tb and rip the rest of that bich out. [not literaly] then just... man i give up. where the hell is melville neway? never heard of it. come down here and give me 5 bucks ill do it

btw ant knows nothing about intakes, just how to change dead batteries

hey i got the same intake its very simple

1) buy a new hose from autozone, pep boys what ever, if you cant take it off yourself ask the guys inside to help you take it off, tell him what you are doing and ask him to find a hose that will fit by test fitting the new mid pipe,

or

use your stock mid pipe, easier imo

2 if you use the new mid pipe, there should be some rubber weather strip stuff that goes around the edge of that hole, u can put that sensor into that hole, i used 2 small zip ties (one around each fitting for the pipes) through the 2 holes on each side of the sensor to hold it in jsut in case

3 jsut test fit the pipe, follow instruction in above link to remove battery tray, fuse box, etc and use a sharpie marker to mark where you are suppose to drill the hole at, go to home depot or hardware store and ask them for the drill attachment to drill holes for installing door locks, and drill the hole, fit the pipe through the hole and attach the filter

you can get a k&n filter from the auto store too, its bigger and a little better

I HAVE THE EXACT SAME INTAKE

1. I USED THE SAME HOSE HARD TO CONNECT THE TUBE BUT I MANAGED AND IT WORKS FINE ONCE I INSTALL THE MEVI I WILL CHANGE THE HOSE.

2. I BOUGHT THIS TYPE OF GLUE NOT CRAZY GLUE BUT THAT MIGHT WORK AS WELL AND GLUED THAT PIECE TO THE BLACK LITTLE RUBBER PART ON THE INTAKE, DONT GET ANY GLUE ON THE METAL PIECE THOUGH KEEP IT NEAT TAKE UR TIME

3. I DIDNT USE THE CAI I KEPT IT SHORT RAM MEANING JUST USING THE SHORT PIECE THAT WASNT CURVED WITH THE MAF SENSOR BOX AND THE AIR FILTER . DONT WASTE YOUR TIME CUTTING ANYTHING OUT JUST TO USE THE WHOLE INTAKE HP NOT WORTH IT

It's 2 years old so no wonder the link is dead. As for installation its pretty much straight forward. Make sure you cut near the battery with a 3" drill.

yea, well i was googling around trying to find some instructions, and found this post. When I ordered it they gave very vauge instructions, and they didnt say you needed to drill, but obviously you do. I was just confirming that

Hey guys, I have the same intake. I definitely recommend getting a new hose as the old one doesn't really bend and fit.

I can't remember exactly if I had to unbolt anything that holds that fusebox in place, but I am thinking I did, just enough to let it move out of the way. That gives enough room for the intake to go right behind the battery. Test fit everything, see where you need to dremel out a hole, then just go for it. When all is said and done the filter should fit right there.

The longest part of the install for me was taking all the plastic out of the wheel well to get to it, cutting a hole, and then putting all that plastic back.


Also, just FYI, it has been rumored that the black box between the throttle body and MAF with the hoses is some resonator that helps performance. I ditched it and didn't really notice any difference, but I just thought I would throw that out there in case anyone was interested. I know getting rid of it certainly made my intake a good deal louder though.

If you have to ask on how to install a CAI, you shouldn't be installing a CAI.

If you didn't know that you had to drill holes to install your CAI, try doing more research first before buying parts.

Honestly, (not directed at OP, just a general statement) if you can't do something as simple as pulling out the old airbox and putting in new shiny pipes, you really shouldn't even pop your hood. TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC. If you f*** up, it makes it 10 times more difficult for a trained professional to clean up the mess you made.

i got a bomz CAI. it's in my fenderwell.

What i did was cut the 3" hole like most people did under the little relay/fuse box next to the battery, and yes you might need to bend the battery tray a bit and move the battery some, but aint nothing will kill you to do that... the hose is a simple thing to go over.. just get new hoses DAMMIT! o_O some that can flex would be nice. and as far as the Temperature sensor, i had cut my wires and resoldered them with the sensor inside the metal plate thingy.. and figured out a way to cover that gap that was left. (a really thick glop of JB weld works great) and when your done, put everything together and yeah. o_O sorry no pictures of install, but mines been working fine for almost 2 years now.

I dont think it helps with performance, jus helps to muffle sound. If u think about it, the maxi has a number of lil air "reservoirs" for the intake system. The one u are mentioning and another underneath the battery. They both kinda help to muffle sound and create an air plenum so that the engine isnt really "sucking in" air like it would from an aftermarket intake, but has a ready supply from a stock air plenum...makes ya think man

I dont have a 3" drill bit so i stuck with the short ram. i dont think this guy has the expertise to do this work. key word here for him is KISS.

Org members already kinda explained, but the hose that used to attached to the stock intake doesnt want to bend BUT it can bend. Jus keep flexing it till it attaches to aftermarket intake. AND make sure u make all connections. We ALL had to do that to install our intakes. MAke sure all the hose clamps are on tightly.

Should go = Throttle body => aftermaket pipe with hose nozzles => MAF => cone filter.

Here's the template I used. I found this on cardomain when I was doing my CAI. Save it and print it to a 8 1/2" x 11" paper. At least you'll have the hole close to the right place.

The ranting and raving is quite unnecesary, I've done plenty of work on the cars I've owned before I got my max. This is just different, and I just needed a little help. No reason to go hatin on me, gotta learn sometime, can't just start out an expert. So no I shouldn't take it to a mechanic, I'm going to lean to do it myself. Thanks you guys who did post help, I appreciate it.

whoa, this thread still going 5 years later... I just came back onto these boards to sell an old maxima part that was in my garage... anyway, i didnt bother with the hole in the fender and just installed it short-ram style. worked fine for 3 years until I sold the car.
