car won't start
When I try to start it, I just get a ticking sound. IT sounds like it's coming from under the throttle body. Is that where the starter is? The engine doesn't seem like it's turning at all. Could this be as simple as a fuse problem, or do you think i'll need a whole new starter, or something bigger. I'm gonna be at work for the next few hours, but thanks for any help.

+2 on the starter. Happened to me after going out for breakfast with my family. I then decided to take my torque wrench and give it a couple of good wacks. That did the trick to get me home to my tools.

On a scale from 1-10, how hard would it be for me to change it with regular tools. I'm pretty sure I'm just going to end up taking it to a shop.
Also, what makes a starter go bad? I only have 65k miles. And what should I expect to pay?

on a scale from 1 to 10 its a 1, very, very easy especially when you have the Injen CAI like i do. the starter is on the engine covered by the factory air ducts, with it out of the way its staring right at you. its three bolts and and a connector if i remember correctly. You should definitely be able to do this yourself in less than one hour even with the factory intake. Good luck. Hope you can save the money and do it yourself.

yeah its a 1, highly recommend doing it youreslf, it should take roughly 40 minutes with running into the annoyances that i go through trying to get the stock intake back together.

Ryan, dont be such a f*ckin noob. You know who lives around us, send them a PM to see if they can help you out. It IS most likely your starter..but no, it's not under the TB.
Your starter is located in the bell housing of the tranny...at the top. It's really not hard to miss.
Your best bet is to go get a new starter from a parts store, PM someone or me, install the new starter....take the old one back to get the core charge back, and then eat at Wendy's.

I know it isn't a dead battery, well at least at first it wasn't. Cause I drove home just fine on Friday, went inside for 30 minutes, and then I came back out and it wouldn't start. But then on Sunday we tried to start it, it wouldn't go, and I accidentally left the keys in the ignition in the ON position, lol, so that probably drained it too. Oh well.

Finally had some experience with replacing a starter. Is a pain in the @ss. Is pretty deep into the car. Right next to the engine. My mechanic had a hard time remove the old starter. Even tho he was a small man (5"3'), getting the bolts loosen was tough. It was the orgininal OEM starter.
In order to do the job yourself, you need the right tools. The bolts is always the pain. Good luck!

When I had to replace my starter I got one of the bolt off but the other one was like welded on.....I had to get it towed cause it wouldn't come off even with an air gun....those bolts are a *****.

explain to me waht the right tools are, because my $12 walmart set did the job just fine with a walmart 10" extension bar. it might be deep into the car but if you take your time to remove the stock airbox and its components its a 20 minute job at most...making it 25 minutes total

Whew! I get home from school, and the beauty is still sitting there. I come to find out, that the AAA guy came, decided to help me out and try and figure out why it wasn't working. He told my stepmom that he 'tightened a loose connection', then jumped the car off and it works fine now. I want to find that guy and kiss him, for saving me from big 10 making something up wrong with my car. Thanks for all the help.

I discovered the car problem at around 2:50 on friday, had to leave at 3 to go out of town. Got back into town, then had to go straight to work. I just saw the first three posts and took their word for it. Actually, I'm just trying to think of all possible excuses for me being an idiot.

My dad just replaced the starter on my Max and he had a time getting the one bolt off but he did it with his regular tools, but my dad is 6'3 and pretty muscular he pulled soo much he was almost pulling the car with him! My starter cost $170.00

trust me, it's the starter. we just did a starter job ourselves. it won't run you more than taking out 2 bolts. if i remember correctly, one 12mm, and one 14mm. it'a a long screw bolt and a short one. very easy to take out. of course i am assuming you also have the aftermarket intake system already installed. because if not, you'll have to go thru taking out the resonator and the mid section of the intake piping. that's a time wasting thing to do. other than that, starter is actually the easiest replacement you can do on this car. good luck!
