it is idling below 500, so pretty rough still. Would the thermostat also cause this? i apologize for my ignorance, this is my 1st attempt to diagnose this stuff myself rather than taking it to the shop...

Refer to your Haynes manual for the procedure for setting the idle speed.

Don't know about the idle speed, but I replaced my ECTS a couple months ago. My CEL was on and my max stalled sometimes. I didn't have an idle problem before during or after. Did you reset the ecu? Also, you may want to do a tune up(ngk coppers or platinums, air filter, fuel filter). First, I would try reseting the ecu. Its free, and takes less than 5 minutes.

My 95's idle was getting worse over time. At first it would drop low at a stop then recover after about 1 second. After a while it would stall sometimes. I thought the problem might be due to the IACV (idle air control valve) so I took it apart. The valve works like a small stepping motor that turns a threaded plunger closer or further away from a small air passage that bypasses the throttle plate. When mine was apart, the armature piece that turns has a small ball bearing on each end. One bearing is hard to see as it only comes out of it's housing a little bit but enough to see. When I turned mine by hand, it made a squeeky, dry bearing kind of noise. I spray lubed it until there was no more noise, then reassembled. Now it idles great. Worth a try.
