WTF is wrong with my car?

i just put on my budget y pipe a few days ago, and the only thing i noticed was that it got louder. I havent felt any gains of power. It's mated to my custom bent 2.5" resonated exhaust, and like i said, the only thing thats different is the exhaust note. I just had the oil changed with Mobil 1, tranny fluid flushed with Amsoil, coolant flushed...the spark plugs are 3000 miles old, and are the NGK Coppers. Any suggestions? I run only premium, and to my knowledge, my knock sensor is fine since i tested it with an ohm meter. all o2 sensors are less than 5000 miles. And my G-Tech 1/4 miles are 16's+ and 0-60 in 8s...im pretty dissapointed. Any thoughts?

Sounds about normal... you dont really "feel" the surge in power like some people make it out to be. YOu definately feel the pick up at mid/high rpms a little more but thats about it... its not the day and night difference people say they feel.

As far as the g tech... they're not all that accurate... and to be perfectly honest you should expect high 15's to low 16's in the 1/4 mile for our cars.

see, the thing is when i had my 96 GLE, with no y pipe, and just a magnaflow muffler, i g teched at 0-60 in 7.06 and 1/4 in 15.5. Now with moderate mods, my 97 se cant get better than that. but i'll try cleaning out the TB. It was done a month or so ago, but it cant hurt to do it again. I'm going to the track on friday, and i was hoping for moderate 15s, but we'll see

1. G-tech sucks. Watch how hard it is to get consistant results by going between different dynos of the same brand (nevermind different branded dynos), then tell me that g-tech is accurate.

2. You don't feel the gains of a y-pipe off the line. You'll feel it when you're cruising at 60 on the highway and suddenly feel the urge to go 100. That's when the y-pipe works it's magic.

3. Are you auto or 5-speed? If you're an auto, let me know if you're tranny starts slipping.

i'm auto...how do i know when or if my tranny is slipping? i'm seriously considering doing the 5 speed swap this winter, but for the time being, i'll have to live with the automagic tranny. explain what you mean gecko

I don't know my car wakes up after 3,500 sometimes get wheelhop (mostly due to ****ty tires) and my knock sensor is messed up. You should be able to feel it. Reset your ECU.

uhmm.....no gains with a ypipe? that's strange. have you checked if you were leaking air in any part of the exhaust? because that happened to me.

see, thats what i thought too, because my y pipe now makes a pssshhhh sound while at WOT. so i took it to car x and they tightened up all the bolts, and made sure there was no leaks. they even put some crap to fill little tiny gaps between the cat and y pipe. so no leaks. im going to reset the ecu after work and see if that does the trick. hopefully it does, because i feel no difference, if i feel a difference, it feels slower. so we'll see what the ecu brings me

well if you dont have the problem fixed by friday ill check it out at the track, my car was bogg city until today, because i cleaned my air filter then after that checked the ecu for codes i got the good ol 0505 which of course is no problems . after i checked for the codes and restet the ecu i took her for a spin and for some reason a ton of low end came back and high end was just as good it was crazy so i really hope it stays running like it was today...then maybe i can beat ya , it should be a real good time

lol, im at sears man, and no one comes in to buy electronics past 7, so i get two hours of free time. i just bought a k&n panel filter today, and switched out my old fram. that thing was pretty dirty. so hopefully after the ecu resets, my car will be back to it's old self, and hopefully a little peppier.

Check exhaust for leaks, probably have bad backpressure. Why would you go with a 3.5 inch tip? That's rice. 2.5 is all you need, and it will be consisent with your piping, which SHOULD give you a better backpressure. Ever think of headers?

There is no such thing as better backpressure...Backpressure is ALWAYS bad.

Digital,

I've never in almost 20yrs of racing ever heard the term "better back pressure".
Is that some kind of oximoron? It's my understanding that back pressure is always a bad thing no matter what kind of vehicle it is. What is important is the velocity of the exhaust, but deffinitly not back pressure.

Another question I ask is what the hell difference does it make to have a larger diameter exhaust tip then the actual exhaust piping. I've never heard of a exhaust tip making or breaking the performance improvement of a custom exhaust system.

Um your actually kinda wrong there. Less backpressure is good to a point, if its too low you can kiss your torque goodbye.

nostrixoxide,

What I'm saying is that if there is any leaks in your exhaust it might not HELP your power. So if there is a leak then I guess you are loosing "velocity" and not backpressure, I may have not been clear, but now I understand. Thanks.

And with the larger diameter exhaust tip I figure it would take away from your velocity since the end is larger and it's not straight thru. I can be mistaken.

Backpressure is bad, what matters is exhaust velocity and how quickly it can escape

Um, no I'm not. Backpressure is always bad. Exhaust velocity is good (which is why you don't want a 5" exhaust). http://www.magnaflow.com/05news/magazine/05sportc.htm.

yoru getting robbed of potential HP if you just have a filter panel, hack that airbox if you havnet done so because thats probably getting rid of 50% of the HP the ypipe promises, the stock intake problaby takes enough for the stock exhaust to output, when you increase the amount you can output, you need to increase the amount of air being taken in

Technically the best free flowing exhaust you can have is one with smaller tips... for example a friend of mine with a Chevelle put a full 3" exhuast from the headers back with 2.75" tips... the smaller tips make the exhaust leave quicker...
