Chrome Gauge rings FAQ?

Has anyone come across a faq to take out the instrument cluster and install the rings? I am stuck and can't take mine out. I removed all the screws, and all the switches, but I still can't pull it out---bottom feels too tight. I think it is clips, but want to verify before I pull too hard--and if I should pull out or up or at an angle. Feels very delicate.

Thanks guys!

Awesome---just what I needed! I can't believe you need to drop the steering column just to install chrome rings. Krickey! Thank you so much for the link!

You don't need to drop the steering column, trust me I've removed the gauge cluster at least 6 times. I have a '95, but I don't think that makes any difference. The bottom of the gauge surround is quite tight, but if you have removed the under dash piece (two screws), the steering column surround piece (6 screws), dropped the column to it's lowest point, and removed the two screws in the in the upper part of the gauge surround, pull out and up from the bottom firmly it should un clip. Then you will have 3 screws holding on the gauge cluster, the rest is common sense good look.

dropping the steering column? haha, nope. yeah, there are clips in the bottom. It will come out, just gently work it out applying more and more pressure and wiggling it side to side.

Well thanks for the further tips and help. I did drop the column though. I got it unclipped ok, but then I couldn't squeeze it out the sides or top with fear of cracking it, so I just dropped the column and it came right out. Like everyone said--the rest was easy. Came out looking great. The surround is a bit lose since I lost one of those metal clips somewhere. Oh well---it may turn up some day when I hit a bump--but I think it is so slightly loose, only I would notice.

Thanks again for all the help!
