I'm wondering how many people have had their auto trans fail, and at what mileage?

how much to fix?

Failed @ 90k, paid 3000 to fix with a shift kit and transmission cooler added also.

HondaKiller718, I wish we were in opposite positions. If that were the case I'd be 5spd. No matter what I do the thing won't die. DR'ed and constantly downshifted with 130K and sadly still going strong.

broaner, you don't have to break your trans to go 5spd. You can just get it if you want it.

Mine failed at 227,000 miles. Had a rebuild + new core, had them put quickshift bands in~ shifts nice n' hard.

Actually, I do because I'm not 18 yet and live with my mom. The only way I can justify the swap is if the existing tranny is broken. Come fall I'm going to start putting small amounts of metal shavings down the dipstick. I have to do it in a discrete way so the inspecting mechanic doesn't blab it all away. God I want a I30 tranny but I can't even find any 5Spds.

What does your mom need proof from a certified mechanic, that its broken? I would tell her that its broken anyway, but still drivable, then you can do your swap. And you may even be able to sell that auto and get some money for the I30 trans.

Who would be paying for the swap, you or your mommy? If you are, then just do it. If your mommy is, then you need to grow up. You spoiled brat. Thats the problem with kids these days. They get what ever they want and have no idea of the value of money.

God, I can't even imagine intentionally hurting my Max let alone thinking of ways to do it. Yeah, I hate my auto tranny but I'm not gonna TRY and kill it...

Bought the car with little less than 91k miles. Tranny needed rebuilding at 96k miles for $1000 even. If I had the car from the beginning then it would've lasted longer. In a few months, I'll put in the VB mod. I'll install my tranny cooler in a few weeks

My auto died when my mother owned it at 31k miles or something, it was like a few hundred miles over waranty (the 35 or 30k mile warranty) and it just died, the dealer fixed it for free, she just had to pay for the labor..

now im at 113k and running like new

My pops' '96 SE auto has 250,000+ miles on the odo and the tranny is still going strong. It's the original tranny BTW, with no rebuild.

Wow, its amazing what happens when you go on vacation for the weekend. Jesus people. Of course I'm paying for. You big fxck heads. Don't be so fxcking hypocritical. The only reason that your saying this stuff if because you know that you were in fact spoiled. Let me explain something to you that you know is true but jump on the chance to call someone a moron. Okay, so I'm not 18 yet right which means I still live with my mom. And those of you that have an IQ above 3.5 realize that its much cheaper and practical to have a vehicle under an adults name. Therefore, technically my mom does own my car and maintains the right to drop its insurance. Also, if I did this swap without her knowing(which would be impossible) she could decide that she wasn't going to spend money on my food or clothes because I wasted $1400 which is 1/3 of the value of the car. But I have good news, after staying with diehard manual drivers over vacation this weekend we got her convinced. The people that we were staying with are very active in auto-xing and cars in general and understand the satisfaction from having a perfect car. They helped explain that I would be totally satisfied with a 5Spd because of the ability to have fun during normal speed driving. Instead of doing all the power mods I'd focus my money on the swap which I will do right the first time with a lightened flywheel, short shifter and possibly clutch. Enough said. Get off my back. BTW, chillinmax, thanx for having at least a little faith in me.

ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE, what clutch do you recomend for a moderately modded N/A max. My good buddy Masaccio has pointed out that many people have had the best luck with OEM but I want more opinions. Any are welcome but will not neccessarily be valued unless you back it up with something other than "I like it"

Seems like the OEM, not the key value obviously, is a pretty good clutch. I have an auto but from everything I've read it seems like you shouldn't need any more grip until you go with some forced induction, and you'll be a lot less likely to blow up your gears with the OEM clutch.

mine decided that it didn't want to come out of third gear at around 90k. i got ****ed cause i couldn't reverse, punched the gas and damn if it didn't pop into reverse. however it didn't shift at all really, the rpms would stay sky high even under light throttle (really light ie. less than 1/8th throttle). I did the drop resitor mod, and it's been running fine since then...i'm at 101k now and going strong. i have rare occasions (less than once every couple weeks) where it won't go into second, but that only happens when i start the car for the first time, after that no probs.

if your haveing trouble with getting into gears, you might try checking the tranny fluid as it has to be just right for everything to work properly since they rely on pressure.

good luck

the failure of an auto trans. depends on how the car is driven and how the tranny is maintained .. some ppl are still on thier original tranny and they're over the 200K mark while others have had to replace thiers at 1/2 or even 3/4 of that mileage
