back fire??

back fire??

sometimes when im drivin kinda hard when i shift my car sounds like it backfires does anyone know what that could be from??

It's just the gasses inside the exhaust. All cars do that.

If you have an exhaust rev the car to redline and listen to the exhaust. As the RPMs begin to fall you can hear the sound.

I think what BIG-D is trying to say is with a more free flowing exhaust you can hear the unburnt fuel that made it into the exhaust detonating when it reaches the cat. After all a cat is designed to burn up any raw fuel that enters the exhaust stream so it doesnt pollute the air.

If it's a "gunshot" true backfire, timing is an issue.

^^ Right, if the backfire sounds like you're doing a drive-by then you should get it checked out. Other 'small' backfires are a result of better exhaust airflow.

My car has small backfires on cold mornings.
