Hesitation in acceleration with my auto...

Fellas,
I was hoping someone could give me an idea of what's going on with my car. I have a 97 auto, and when I take it out of overdrive (light on) and acclerate in 3rd gear, right when I reach ~3200 RPM, the car actually hesistates and the tachometer actually drops about 200 RPM and then starts to climb again. The rest of the engine range is quite smooth and linear, but this always happens around the same 3200 RPM mark. Does anybody have an idea of what is causing these symptoms? I have 132,00 miles on and at 115,00 miles just changed:

Spark plugs OEM NGK's
Fuel filter
Cleaned throttle body
Tranny fluid

Thanks,
-str8ridin

It's an auto, what do you expect. I get the same thing but at around 2000rpm. Say I'm coming to a red light and start to slow down. The light turns green and I give it gas but the cars seems to hesistate because it didn't downshift yet. POS auto, or your KS is bad.

lol, yeah, auto's do suck. It might be the KS like you said. I'll see if I can pull the code.

whoa, are you certain? How long do coils usually last? Are they easy to replace?

I appreciate your help...

Yo, that's crazy...we've got the same exact description of the same problem!

But the diagnoses is that it's just a common thing with our cars?! I've never noticed it before. Have you pulled any codes? KS code? I'll check mine today. It's gotta be something that can be fixed.

Hey guys - I've got a similar problem I'm trying to hunt down. my 1998 5-speed car hesitates when I accelerate sometimes - say for a second or two, then starts to pull, usually only if I am driving smooth will i notice this, if I really mash the pedal, she tugs and goes good. My guess is that its the knock sensor because I've had similar dealings with my F.I. 350 Camaro. The car is just a daily driver (98,000 miles). Any ideas? This stuff is all greek to me! I need a small-block!!!

i always thought it was the torque converter unlocking. same things happen to me on my 5th gen auto and i have no maintenance issues with respect to plugs, coils, etc.

Sloppy, are you talking about when you floor it? All autos have that split second hesitation when you wait for the air to get to the engine, or some crap like that. You car revs like crazy and then it takes off. 5spds have that too.

Read my post on maxoutofcash, leave the orange light that says "O/D OFF" turned off (so that you can't see it.)

I'll bet a million dollars for you auto guys this hesitation happens around 55-60mph. Try the test that I listed in that thread, there is nothing wrong with your coils etc etc.

right at about 65, i can be hitting it with the o/d off and then put o/d back on and the torque converter will unlock. it will accelerate faster after changing back but i miss out because my auto shifts at about 6k which is way too early to keep my VI open.
