Locking Differential

Ok, I'm not sure if I have a locking or non locking differential. How can I find out other than smokin' the tires. Is there somewhere I can look on my car to see which one I have?

You definetly don't have a locking differential unless someone managed to find one and put one in there.

Some 5 spds have VLSD's, but to my knowledge no maxima was ever offered with a locking diff.

Yeah...check the plate on the transmission for the VIN. Make sure that matches the VIN on the car.

Then check the plate on the firewall in the engine bay. There will be a transaxle model number on it. If it ends with a V you have a LSD...otherwise you have an open-diff.

Or you could lift the front up, and spin the wheels. rotate one side and watch the other. If they spin the same side, you have a limited slip... if not, you don't.

I couldn't find the plate on the firewall, all i found was the VIN stamped to it. I'll guess I'll jack the front end up and see.

Unless you have a Canadian model, I highly doubt you have the VLSD.
