I just bought another cluster, my car is SE, but the cluster I bought wasnt, so its black. I was wondering how, or even if you could take the needles out, so I can change the paper or what ever it is, so it could be white. What I mean by changing it is just swapping it from the old one, I tried but I didnt want to brake the needles and then have it where both dont work.

if you are 100% sure yours is an SE, you should probably take the cluster out and make sure it's not stamped by some junk yard. i had to get another cluster after some difficulties with mine and the indiglos i used to have. well, the mileage is different and nissan says that it can't be changed. i have SE gauges now, but the mileage will always be off. who knows, maybe it was an odd SE that didn't come with the standard white-face gauges, but i'd check that out just to see if someone pulled a fast one. if you installed a different gauge cluster, it changes the mileage (according to my dealership, it's permanent).

as for your question, you can swap in another non-digital 95-97 cluster with no problems other than mileage.

if you take off the needles they will be inacurate, unless you know how to put them back in the exact same spot.

the posts that the needles attatch to could move and then they would rear wrong. like if you took off the fuel needle and it was on full, then you put it back on but just over full..... then it would read inaccuratly. I know this because a friend of mine took off his needles and now his speedo is way off.

Best bet is to not even mess w/them unless you're a pro at it. By messing w/my speedometer, i now go 10 mph faster than normal and my rpms are crapped.

Its really not that hard to do.

Whatever you do...NEVER PULL THE NEEDLES OFF UNLESS YOU'RE SPINNING THEM AROUND.

Make sure to take out the little posts on the gauges that have them. Then move the needle GENTLY until it stops moving. Note that position, that will be the position you will put it back on when you need to attach them.

Then slowly twist the needles as your are pulling them off. It may take 2-3 mins on each needle going back and forth to get them off without doing any damage.

You should have no problem.
