H&R with KYB GR-2s question

H&R with KYB GR-2s question

Simple question: Is the H&R sport spring a good match for the KYB GR-2s for someone who only wants a marginal drop on a 99 SE? I'm not racing it and I don't need adjustability. The specs look as though GR-2s and H&R sports are just a bit firmer than the OE SE springs. I just want to get rid of the 4X4 look.

Thanks for the advice. Nice ride. Did the ride get noticeably more harsh with the 18's?

In this previous thread http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=252343, nismoluvr states that Troy from KYB informed him that GR-2's cannot even handle a 1" drop without blowing and that they offer no more damping than a stock strut which is contrary to the specs that I have read elsewhere that indicate that the GR-2's are 15% firmer than stock. That thread interested me since I currently have GR-2's with SE springs installed, but my H&R's are scheduled to arrive today from UPS. I'd like to hear some real world analysis/rebutal of nismoluvr & Troy's statements concerning this from Max owners who have this setup.

That's good to know, cuz the H&R's are on the way. I just want to get the right struts......the first time....... How does the tranny type come in to play with the spring choice? Incidentally, I had Eibach Pro-Kit on my 92 SE-R and they SUCKED! Moved to custom Hypercoils and it was a world of difference, but that's apples and oranges cuz the SE-Rs don't have enough travel to begin with.

Did you modify or replace the bumpstops? Or is this an issue?

Nice to know information. I guess we need to hear from long term owners of this setup. Surely there must be a firmer strut that is non-adjustable. I can't see going with adjustables for my daily driver, but I'd hate to spend good money only to blow out the GR-2s. With my SE-R, I seem to recall stipulations in the blow-out warranty, on an AGX, that allowed for the use of Eibach Pro-Kits. Maybe Troy could answer this, tho it sounds like we already have that answer.

Just swapped stock for this setup last weekend and it priovides a really nice drop without too harsh of a ride.. I alos have 17's. So yes there a good match..

eibachs will drop the front a little bit more in a 5 speed, and eibachs or h & r's will do fine on an auto, but the eibachs are a bit stiffer, the h & r's give a good ride and great handling all together but i wish i would have gotten the eibachs so the front could be a lil lower

OK....I have Supension Tech springs with the GR-2. I did lots of shock research (had the blues..oops) and spoke with Chuck (product mgr at KYB) and he said that the GR-2 is approx 15% stiffer then stock and are fine if as long as the drop is 1.5 or less.

FYI The ST spring give the least drop 1.3 all around but are very stiff

Thanks for the info and research! Did your research turn up any need for shorter bumpstops? The KYB bumpstops are pretty resonably priced, but if they're not necessary, why spend the $$.

I would recommend the KYB bump stop/boots. Smooth roads you will not notice but you will be happy you have the KYBs when you hit potholes and other pavement issues.

I did nothing at all with my bumpstops. It's not that big of an issue.

It's the rubber or urethane insulator surrounding the strut shaft inside that top spring seat, designed to keep the suspension from driving the shaft through the bottom of the strut. If your spring is shorter than stock, ie aftermarket drop springs, you want a bumpstop that is shorter so you don't slam the strut against it when your spring compresses completely. sumpin like dat......

Is the KYB bumpstop everybody talks about some special aftermarket item that is different from the bumpstop that is included with the original GR-2?

I agree, H&Rs dont drop as much as others but thats prob y they'r a little
softer ride, plus if u have a lip, it helps not to scrape on every driveway.

As for long term on GR-2, ive had mine for 9months and have had no probs. I ride 17s and didnt like the ride quality at first but have gotten adjusted to it and would not go back to stock, but I wouldnt go stiffer either.

Thanks for the info. I'm almost sold on the GR-2s for almost 200 less than anything else. If the H&Rs are softer with less drop than most it shouldn't take too much dampening over OEM to control them. I don't want to destroy the ride, and with an auto, (my last 99 was a stick), its no race car anyway. Its funny that reviews of the 4th gen's complain about the stiffness of the SE. I guess that's relative to other Luxo 4 door midsize family cars.

Actually I called KYB and the technician there informed me that the GR-2s are like having the AGX's set on 2front and 4 rear and they can handle most springs on the market this side of coilovers. I also personally had eibach/gr2 on my 3rd gen for over 50k miles with no issues and the combo was very good. I would personally use these unless I was going to dish out the extra green for some illuminas.

I really like the H&R/GR2 combo. The ride is like stock, but the handling is a lot better.

I would also just go with the KYB bumpstop/boot combo. They are quite a bit stronger than the stock boots that come with the Maxima. I just ordered mine from Cattman, but I hear Tirerack also sells them.

I have eibach with GR2. the ride is not harsh but not like stock, somewhat bouncy imo, however cornering stability has improve significantly.
The front drop is about .3 -.5 inch lower then the rear.
