more info needed, if its strictly speed related its probably not an engine problem, and definately not an alternator problem

yea if its a speed issue could be your airbox or intake. maybe you didnt latch it down fully and its open? i cant really think of anything else that would "growl" with speed.

did you recently replace your airfilter? is it sitting in there properly?

Is it a "Growl" or "sucking" sound? If a sucking sound, most likely it is what everyone else has already said, airbox.

Its a growl sound..

i would have noticed if it was a sucking sound..

Im currently away from the maxima so I would check if the airbox is loose or not by this weekend.

Ha Ha i would love if it was from the intake..i do get a growl sound when i go WOT..

but this sound is consistent starting from 25-30 mph gets louder aroun 45-50 and then stays the same going 70+ mph

the sound is louder inside the cabin and I can definitely tell its not the intake or air box.

This is the 2nd alternator we have in the maxima.

I will take it to the dealer when i get the maxima to check whats wrong.

In case if its the alternator should I just buy another one from dealer or get it from somewhere else ?

may be I mis used the word growl here completely..

let me try to rephrase it..

when driving about 35+ mph i can hear a loud sound/noise coming from under the hood. Besides the wind, tire and road noise its very noticeable. Mostly everyone in the car can hear it.

Now I dont have the car with me. I drive a G35. I used to drive the maxima but it passed on to my brother. I will check the air box condition and alternator when I go home this weekend.

The maxima is completely stock accept the cone air filter.

i just dont like how it sounds now for the last few weeks.

If you stand in front of the car with the hood open and the car running and you have someone inside the car mashing the skinny pedal do you hear the noise? Or is it only while the car is in motion?

I will check that

its only starts going more than 25+ mph

thats why i really dont know whats wrong ??

below 25 mph or so it sounds normal and drives normal..The car runs great. Its only when I drive faster the noise gets louder.

the skinny pedal
you dont need someone in the car just turn the throttle linkage from under the hood.

but if it is the airbox issue, and i think it is, revving the engine from anywhere wont cause the sound to be audible. it would be the air being drawn in while driving that would cause the growl.

so if you open the throttle while listening to the engine and you dont hear it, you can assume its an intake problem.

Sounds like a bad bearing on one of the accessories, i.e. A/C, water pump, alternator, idler.

While hearing the noise and maintaining speed, if you change gear so the engine RPM increases, does the noise change?
