Ok, I'm bored, penniless and have seven hours, and I'm considering changing over my winter tires to summer tires on my own (and getting them properly balanced in a week or so). Is this something I can consider doing myself, or is it a big no-no?

Different set of tires on the same rims. I've just about given up already actually The problem is removing the old tires with the equipment I have. It ain't happening... Oh well

You need a tire machine to do it... you'll never do it with hand tools

you might wanna try going to some nearby highschools and seeing if they have an auto shop. if they do, check if they have a tire machine. i know mine did and they never used it, and if you just ask nicely the shop teacher will do it for you or let you use it yourself. they do this because it lets the students there see how the machines work and stuff.

There's actually a tool sold in off-roading magazines that allows you to "break the bead" & remove a tire from a wheel, as well as do the re-mount.

(It's meant for trailside emergencies, when help is far away).

I don't see why it wouldn't work on a car wheel/tire, but who knows.

I don't think this job is worth the hassle or cost of the tool, personally. The difference in cost between a straight balance and a dismount/remount/balance at a tire-shop isn't going to be that much.
