Wrecked car's VIN number + Possible Transmission Donor?

I'm trying to find out if there's a glitch in my friends computer, or if he is indeed telling me that canadian maxima's do not have what they classify as "locking" transmissions. Is there a way to find out the transmission type of the car with the VIN? The number I was given is:

JN1CAZ1D4TT160427

No, this is not my VIN number, no, it's not a drivable car's VIN number, it's a VIN from a car that was wrecked and the transmission belongs to that car. I'm just trying to find out how come he's telling me there are no "locking" differential 5speeds in canada.

Looks like there was a typo in that.

Correct VIN: JN1CA21D4TT160427

Does Carfax tell if the vehicle has VLSD? I don't have an account but I tried checking them. If they do, I'll be looking it up via them.

You cant tell from carfax. Call you nissan dealership and tell them you want to find out if you maxima has lsd or not for (example - you need a drive axle). They will run the vin through and tell you. Good luck. I did this like 15 times and all the supposivly LSD's were bogus.

You cannot tell from the VIN, you need to see the Identification Plate on the passenger side firewall.

If the trans axle number ends in an "A" is non locking, if it ends in a "V" it LSD.

VIN's do not give any transmission info, not even if its auto or manual.

All SE's from Canada 95-99 are LSD, manual and auto. All other models are "ONE WHEELER PEELERS"

The dealer can tell by the VIN, he ran one in front of me.

If you have access to the tranny itself, look at the seals where the axles go. If the drivers side is bigger than the passenger side then its LSD , also if its LSD you shouldnt be able to see through the axle holes to the other side. If you have access to the donor car itself check the identification plate like Jime said.

there's a code that goes something like "RFXXXXX" on the passenger side firewall.
if its a canadian SE model, then it most likely has a locking (limited slip) differential.

Or it could be RE4F04V = Auto VLSD

This is the transaxle number from the identification plate not the VIN.
