How do I replace Hood Supports?

Hey guys,

Since the search is off, and I have already tried to search other forums, could someone please tell me how to remove the old hood supports. I already bought the StrongArms replacements, but don't have a clue as to how to remove the old ones.

Thanks,

Read the directions on the strong arm package. Just unbolt the old ones, and bolt the new ones on. Takes no more then 10 minutes.

Oh and make sure you prop the hood up so it don't smack you in the head when you take your old supports off.

I lost my digi pics of the install when my computer crashed, DOH!
Although, they might be somewhere in Internet Purgatory as some folks
have seen the pics...anyhow, as NJMAXSELTD said, be sure to tie the
hood to something secure -- if you choose to stick a broom stick or
something in there, be sure to use TWO and keep them sturdy.

When I did mine, I tied a rope to the hood latch, and tied that rope
to my roof supports in the garage -- much more stable...

take care,

I bought mine from Canadian Tire (Canada's Pep Boys, sorta)
and these ran about $20...but, don't quote me on that...

I bought mine from Advance Auto Parts, looks alot like an Autozone. The parts number is StrongArm 4524. Try a local Pepboys or something. Each cost ~17 dollars.

Ok, forgot to mention this, but I have already read the instructions on the package and it looks like the 4th gens, have the ball connectors.
What I don't get is how to remove the ball stud from the original socket. It states to remove the security lock ring, but I can't really see a ring on my OEM part.
Is the security ring on the side attached to the hood or the side attached to the frame?
Time for me to take another look at the car...

Thanks

I think the ball socket simply unbolts...get a wrench, and start turning!

The ball joints are on top of a ball screw that goes into the car. Your new kit should have the same screws in it. All you have to do to get the old ones off is unscrew that screw, you shouldnt have to worry about trying to pop the socket off. Thats the way it was with mine at least...

Call ahead first -- not all Crappy Tire Stores carry the model.

Hey Naujik,

The Kingsway or Cambie store will probably have them in stock. They seem to carry a fair bit of stuff due to their larger size. I've found the Hastings store always has to order stuff in.

That said, one store can also check the stock of other stores for you and save you some running around.

/me going to stop by Canadian Tire myself tonight.....

Hmm.. I will go by the Lougheed Hwy store in Coquitlam on my way home. If they don't have it, I'll just pick one up over the weekend.

Woooh! The weather is clearing up a bit.. it's bright outside.

Thanks for the tip on the stores.

You're welcome!

Oh, just thought of something else. I picked up a biz card the other day from a company that sells rebuilt struts in town. They'll take your old core and rebuild it. I can send you the info if you like. I'm not sure what they charge for this service though.

Hmm.. Wouldn't buying a new set of struts be more economical and provide better performance?

Nope, mine were $17 each and didn't come with extra ball screw. I had to pry out the original ball screw out of the socket of the original arms. The first one was a b*tch but then the rest came out a little easier. It took a lot of prying and using a needle the size of a large paper clip, and a pair of needle nose pliers. I pretty much had to pry off a part of the outer lip of the original arms to remove the ballscrew.

BTW, was your kit the OEM one from Nissan or StrongArms?

To be honest, my dad picked them up at autozone one day coming home from work. I know they arent OEM, but Im not sure whether they are the StrongArms or not.
