Weird sound when starting

I just got my car back less then a week ago from the shop. They put in a new starter because my car was having a little trouble starting. But now ever since I got it back once in a while when I go to start it sounds like a scratching scrapping sound. Like no parts are moving just the electric is working. Do you know what might be wrong? Did they hook up the starter incorrectly because it never did this before.

I had the same noise BEFORE I just replaced my starter. I would check to see if a new shiny starter is in there.

i have a 99 se-l, and i get a weird noise when i start it up when it's cold, seems like it's coming from the intake area, i've only started to notice it in the cold weather with my hybrid setup.......been told it's normal with the cold weather but could be wrong, car runs fine, maybe it's my starter, but i doubt it

Same here. Everytime i start it in the cold it sounds like if u were to spin a shopping cart wheel that is loose. The rpm's up two 1500 then dip down then back up, sometimes stalling.

hmm never really had the stalling problem, just notice it alot when it's cold, if the car has been driven sometime recent, it never happens, so i assume it's because of the cold air......do you have a hybrid setup ?

Yep, i have a hybrid. My ocasional stalling is probly due to my IAC being unplugged to keep the idle down when cold.

mine also makes a strange sound when starting. after it sounds like it catches over, it sounds like one part is still going and makes some weird noise, still starts fine every time though.

Does it sound like a rattlesnake for about 3 seconds after cold starting? I have the same problem, but it doesn't seem to follow any pattern. Also, my father's Infintity G20 does the exact same thing, only louder. The G20 seems to be coming from the exhaust, while mine seems more like the engine compartment. What causes that noise?

BINGO..I have read online that it is the starter needs to be re-greased or something. But it is wierd how it goes away after the car is warm??

well an explanation is that grease can freeze/get very cold, which means it doesn't travel, or move as fast, when it's cold, which would explane the sound of the starter.....but from what i hear it almost seems to be coming from the intake, like the cone part

Do you see any pattern to when it's going to make the noise? I can't figure out when it's going to do it - doesn't seem to have anything to do with temperature, rain, etc., did it in the summer as well as the winter. Also, does it sometimes go further and cause starting problems, like the engine won't catch and it takes several tries to start? I've had several times where it was mild, and others where it is really loud, like parts banging together, and the car would not start and/or blows stinky smoke from the exhaust.

My car only seems to do it when it sits outside in the cold for a while. I had my car parked in a heated garage when i had my windows tinted..they took it out and it started fine w/ no noise.

Does anyone know if there is some type of all weather grease out there..that wont harden or soften? (that will work with the starter)

I think the more appropraite description would be the sound of someone strangling a duck

Goto Motorvate's excellent site for 4th gen Maximas on how to re-grease it.
