15's to 17's or 18's?

Hey everyone.... I've had my Max for about a year and a half now and I want to update the rims. When I bought the car, the previous owner had already put on some chrome 15" rims. I don't like them very much, but I guess its better than stock. I am debating over getting Konig Tantrums 17's or 18's. Obviously, the 18's will be slower, but will there be a significant difference between the 17" and 18" rims in terms of acceleration? Right now, I am assuming that my 15's are heavy because of the chrome. Konig Tantrums are somewhat light rims for their size. I am hoping to lose very little acceleration after the switch, but I also like the look of bigger rims. If acceleration isn't harmed too much, I would want to go with the 18's, but if there is a major difference between the 2, then I will go with the 17's. What do you guys think?

This topic has been discussed a lot, I know, but everyone has compared their bigger rims to stock 15's.... when I am coming from heavier 15's. Please let me know, thanks a lot!

Shawn

I'd go with 17"s...especially if your car is not lowered. The bigger the rim, the more of a 4x4 look you're gonna have. Plus, the 17"s will be lighter.

I say go with 18's they look awesome on a maxima cuz is a bigger car. If it was a sentra I'd go with 17's. Not is is alot of difference but u can tell. And also i would go with those Moda R6 they look sweet on any size.

If you keep the overall diameter the same, you shouldn't notice any difference in acceleration. If your overall weight is lower and the overall diameter is the same, you might even come out on top by a bit.

Anyone can correct me if I am wrong here.

I plan to lower soon also, so that isn't a problem. The problem with 18's is that the mass is concentrated more on the outer edge, as compared with 15's. Does anyone have any idea how much heavier my chrome 15's will be than the stock 15's on max's? I have never weighed them, but if anyone has an estimate, I would really like to know. Thanks!

actually my 18" tantrums are quite heavy, like 23 lbs or so, with my pirellis on em, it's like 48 lbs if I remember right, which is like 3-5 lbs heavier than my stock 15s were...

You want it to really look good go with 18's. If you care about weight then go with a 17x8.

If you care about performance at all, no more than 17's, 16's are recommended but look like *** on a max. If your all show no go, i'd say 18-20's , 19's actually if you want your odometer to be even close to right?

My main question is how much of a speed difference is there between 17's and 18's? Is the one inch difference that noticeable in speed?

Also, does anyone have any pics of a max with Konig Tantrum 18's?

the size of the wheel doesnt throw off your odometer is the size of the tire size you go with=Total overall wheel diameter.

I am not talking about my odometer being thrown off, I am talking about my acceleration. With bigger rims, the weight is concentrated more towards the outside, which means it takes more force to accelerate. Has anyone gone from 17's to 18's and noticed any acceleration differences?

Yeah and i meant that there is no proper tire size to fit 20's and still have a correct odometer reading.

I have 18s. I hate that 235/40/18 tires start from the $170 range. But they do look good. I was on stock suspension for a while too, but it does look better lowered.

I *had* a link to rim weights....If i remember correctly, there was a decent sized gap from 17" Tantrums to 18"....it was like 3-4 lbs per wheel...im pretty sure that would slow you down a slight amount....It's up to you...I'd personally go with 17's, cuz I can't afford 18's, but its up to you

i went from 15"s to 18"s. ride is more rough, i do feel a drop in acceleration, but i went from 15"s to 16"s on my old max and regreted it the day i bought them. but 18"s will put you in 4 X 4 mode. observe:

and

and yes, i am lowering my car. just after the winter. i already have my springs.

Hey, what's up Ed? I don't see myself selling them anytime soon, unless I catch a super deal on 18" modas or evos. If for some reason I do, I'll keep ya in mind.
