Factory Alarm or Just Keyless Entry?
I just purchase a 99 Nissan Maxima SE, so I am a newbie.
Is the factory alarm only used for keyless entry? Does it have a starter kill? How do you activate the chirp instead of silent mode?

It's only for keyless entry. The alarm will only sound if the car is locked and the window and hood is opened. It won't sound if the windows are broken.
And there is no such thing as a "chirp" mode. The only thing that happens when you lock the car is the flashing of the lights. Besides, why would you want to announce to everyone that you're leaving your car with a chirp/horn beep?

Mine never did that. And I've never heard of anyone else's car doing that. I know if you hold the lock button down, the panic alarm goes off and the horn starts beeping constantly.

press again, it "chirps" to verify.....the man is correct.

My 96 does not have the chirp feature. I just tried it, it just kept blinking.
Also another thing that you should know is that I believe the rear windows are not protected.. so if a theif knew his ****, he'd break the rear door windows to get in. I remember reading a long time ago on the ORG that nissan uses $25 alarm systems on the Maximas...

test it out.. you dont need to break the window.. just leave the window in the down position and arm it.. after its armed open the lock from the inside and then open the door from the out side.. hear that"......" nothing...

its the org.. we are one.. as long as you tired to search for the answer and cannot find it the answer, then the response will be quick and also the number of poeple on the org at any given time. did you check if yours does it?

My 97 does not chirp under any circumstances, but my friend's 98 did. I hate the chirp anyway. I noticed when I test drove a 2k3 last week that it chirps--can that be shut off? Also the back doors of my 97 are protected by the alarm (if you open them when armed the system screams--I tested this). Over the summer my rear window was smashed but I don't know if the alarm ever went off then. To the best of my knowlege the alarm is factory.

but i agree with the other people here who said the chirp is annoying. my 91 SE had an aftermarket viper alarm and i always used the silent arm/disarm method.
i wouldn't be concerned about it being a cheap alarm either. even a $500 alarm is not going to stop someone from taking your stereo/car if they really want to.
