I Hate the Stock Shifter !!!

I had the Pacesetter shifter and thaught it was better and smoother to go back to stock. So when I had my tranny put in, I decided to have the stock shifter put in..well I hate it !! Its like shifter water

so i was thinking about putting the pacesetter back in myself, but ill probably winde up gettin sick of that too

Drive a ferrari 360 - then try and get back in your max to go home........

(although the shifter won't be the only thing you'll be mad about then...)

Why don't you try cutting your stock shifter. I was worried about the problems people had with the STS, so I just cut mine down about and 1-1/2". The throw is not actually any shorter, but the distance your had has to go is lessend. I like it alot.

Hmmm, what do you define as throw then? I thought it was the distance your hand moves?

the throw is the distance it takes to go from one gear to another. If you cut the stock shifter the distance stays the same. The leverage is just changed. Your hand does not have to moves as far between shifts.

So if your hand does not moves as far, the throw is lessened by your hand.

I used an aftermarket momo ****, it connects with 3 screws on opposite sides.

You can use a pipe threader, but usually the circumference of the motion of using the tool is too great for use inside the car I think. It's been a while since I considered cutting a stock lever (my integra)...I just lived with it. (Actually, a circular **** where the thread goes through all the way to the top made me happy).

Has to do with what part of the whole lever you shorten. I mean, STSs aren't just levers that are cut from the top....it's the other way. Cutting the top of the lever doesn't really shorten the throw, but it can make the throws more comfortable.

I've gotten used to the stock throws/****. But every now and then mine will get a little caught up engaging second gear and sometimes I'll scratch a bit if I don't catch it with my foot in time. Otherwise it's smooth sailin to me. The clutch (OEM) is what brings my woes

Do you have a stock shifter? Next time you drive grab the shaft at the bottom, not the ***, and shift that way. Feel how your hand does not move as much? It does not make the distance between gears shorter. So is shifting by holding on the the shaft a STS, NO. Is cutting the stock shifter the same as a STS, No. Do they both feel different and better than stock, yes.

I agree that an STS makes your throws shorter, and it works in a different way by moving the pivot point itself (I know, i have the Pacesetter). However, if you cut the stock shifter, you are still moving your hand a little less, because the length of the shifter is now shorter at the top, while the pivot point is the same, but you are still moving your hand between gears less of a distance than before (by trigonometry).

If that's what you meant originally, then I agree with you.

Before you put your STS back on, try this;

It's a Mazda Miata aftermarket shift ****. Totally compatible with the Maxima threading. Just unscrew the stock shifter, and screw this one on. It makes the shifter slightly shorter, so the throws are a bit shorter, too. And it looks cool too.

Thats all I was saying. I was hesitant to get a STS. This was a good alternative. It is much better than stock.

what material is it made out of? is it comfortable to hold?

i was going to buy a MOMO race air all leather ****, it's a ball type **** but MOMO is expensive as hell...

check the sig for the sola luna **** described above.

$35-$40 i think it was. it is metal but it has some coating on it that makes it not so hot and not so cold in those temps. it fits my palm perfectly. btw, the **** is on a pacesetter STS.

WHen I owned a 4th gen (about the time of this thread in 2002), I liked the Pacesetter STS. Was much smoother than the stock shifter & I liked that it was adjustable & the shorter throws...
