A/C compressor squeals on start up and for a few minutes afterwards.
At least that's what I think it is.
I only get the squeal when the A/C is on and the engine is cold. The squeal increases in loudness when you rev the engine.
After about 2 minutes of running the engine, the squeal stops.
This has been happening for a couple of months.
I changed the belts last fall, so I don't think that is it (too tight).
Anyone else experience this? Bearings in the compressor perhaps?

My car - 97 GLE BLACK - was making the same noise and due to the belt being too tight, the Idler Pulley broke. So, we replaced the idler pulley and the car was still making the same noise. I definitely think you are on the right track with the bearings - we replaced those and the noise went away.

PhatBastard, are you sure it's not the belt? Try to spray belt dressing on it. If it shuts up, then you've saved some $$$ and time.
A squeal is usually a belt not gripping on a pully.
Bearings make grinding noises and dry sounds.

That's why I LOVE this board. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. I'll recheck the tension on the belt as well.

Did you replace your compressor just because of the noise? or was it not cooling?

to make a long story short, my compressor made wierd sounds, the compressor froze, any belts or pulleys that ran with the compressor got warped so i had to replaced them all. btw I had a squeal at start up an then the water running through the pipes sound

Clutch Plate
I was just wondering if anyone has checked the clutch plate on the front of the compressor??? I know i was experiencing some gawd-awful squealing for a while, i kept adjusting the belt, tensioner, pulleys, etc. Then i asked a buddy of mine (whose dad owns an a/c repair shop) and we took the compressor off only to realize that the squealing was coming from the clutch plate trying to engage but was not able to "get a grip".
So....if anyone knows where to get a clutch plate from w/o getting a whole new compressor, please let me know via pm or reply.
