How do I shut off traction control?!?
Is there a way to disable traction control? Maybe it's just me, but I feel like it really slows down the car a LOT. I got dusted by one of those new Mercedes Hatchbacks yesterday, it feels like my car has like NO pick up off the line. Any help is appreciated!!

yeah, it is an auto, and i know that is a big part of my problem. I have driven my old 98SE 5spd, my friends 96 GLE auto, and my 96 I30 auto (with traction control) and my car seems to be quite a bit slower than my friend's maxima. That is why I was wondering.

traction control is a system that decreases engine rpms if it detects a wheel spin
limited slip diff locks wheels together if one spins out
for example
if you spin your right wheel on snow traction control will slow the engine down to stop the spin, vlsd will transfer the power from the spining right wheel to the left without decreasing engines power output

OK, thanks
I know I have VSLD. Then are we discussing VSLD or traction control? It seems they would not work together well? Can a 5-speed even have traction control?
I don't think I have traction control, just the VSLD.

If you have traction control, which I doubt you do, there is a button on the right next to your dimmer switch that says TCS OFF. When you press it the TCS light on your speedo comes on indicating it's off.
Traction control will not make your car faster. The system only engauges if wheel spin is detected. And belive me when it kicks in YOU FEEL IT. It's just like you let go of the gas pedal when the system kicks on and the SLIP light on the speedo will flash at you.
Does your car have the TCS-OFF switch?
Does your car have the SLIP light on the speedo?
If your answer to any of these questions is no, they you don't have traction control.
To turn off the traction control, just toggle the TCS OFF switch once. The TCS light will light up indicated the system is disabled. It always returns to the enabled state when you restart the car.

Interesting....I just checked and the switch located next to the dimmer is for the gas flap. You are right, I might not have the traction control, but I am thinking that I do, because I have had the car for a month now, and I have not broken traction once. I drive it pretty damn hard too. Hmmmm...

Well maybe the switch is in a different location in the I30, I don't have a clue. The traction control would really slow you down if you have a small loss of traction off the line becuase it would drastically cut power. So in I30's the place next to the dimmer opens the gas flap? Maximas have that on the floor. Check your owners manual, it should show where the button should be for TCS.

you may just have a limited slip. I have the Touring model. If Traction control was an option I would have it. And I don't. If I could turn it off and on I would know it. And I can't. I really don't think you have it.

I forgot about the electric gas door switch in Infinitis. What are the chances that the TCS system was only offered as an option in Automatic Maxima SE's with the Leather and CC package?
My SE-L has traction control. I've only had it kick in when taking off in snow or on wet roads if I hit the gas to hard. The wheels spin for a brief second, then the whole car throttles down hard, then slowly throttles up again. Works great in bad weather and definately helps you pull out on slippery roads without spinning your wheels to the point you don't go anywhere.

I have TCS w/ on/off switch
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought TCS was only offered on '99 model vehicles (auto). I have an on/off switch located on the left side of the dash next to the cruise control on/off switch (infiniti). The way I tested it was by doing a hard launch in the rain, you will feel the tcs cut-power like you let off completely on the accelerator.
My 2 cents

It maybe that the auto does not have it, I'm not totally sure. But like you said your vin # says you do.
Maybe you can go and read some old mag articles which explain the different options avalilable? Mayb you could get ahold of Nissan and ask them?
