Mobil 1 Oil Change , How Many Quarts Of Engine Oil ?
I'm planning to change my oil at Mobil 1 station. They charge $14.95 +tax(includes oil and filter) but I downloaded a coupon from their website so it will be $13.95. It's cheap because the filter alone would cost me $10 at Strauss/Autozone + 3.30 per quart. I don't wanna use synthetic because my car has 189k miles.
How many quarts/cans of oil do you usually fill ?
I'm gonna get 5w 30 because it's getting cold in NY.

13.95 is dirt cheap. It cost me about the same if i were to buy the oil and filter to do it myself. Also, that's about what walmart charges for crappy supertech oil n fram filters.

The reason you don't wanna use synthetic oil is if you r tight on budget .. or feeling cheap, no?

Go to Wal-Mart and buy the 5 quart bottle of Mobil 1 for about $25 and get a Napa gold or Wix oil filter for $5 and do it yourself in 15 minutes.
Your car will hold between 4 and 4.5 quarts if you drain completely and change the filter.

seriously dude... it's not hard to change the oil yourself... why would you pay someone? It takes 15 minutes max and you'll be putting good oil in and a good filter. 4.25 quarts. In fact put 4 quarts in at first the run the engine for a minute, then turn it off and let it sit for 5-10 minutes and check the level, add a little more if it needs it. Mobil 1 is good stuff. 5W30 will be fine.

There's only 3 "screws" to play with:
1) jack the car up, go below the car, have a catch pan ready. Under the car, you'd see a screw on the passenger side of the oil pan, unscrew that while having the oil pan to catch the oil coming out.
2) Filter is on the passenger side of the engine, kinda below the inner belt assembly, untwist that thing with a dry rag or use a oil filter pinch to do it. Oil will come out of this spot, too.
Wait for a couple minutes to drain oil, then screw 1) oilpan screw 2) new oil filter back on
3) Drop the car back down, lift the hood, remove oil cap, pour 4.5 quarts of oil in that baby, crank the engine, run for 2 minutes, shut it off for a few minutes, check the dip stick to make sure level.

Just changed my oil today at Mobil1 station and I paid $16.68 after tax and evironment fee.
They used Exxon 5w30 non synthetic oil (I didn't want synthetic anyway), and a regular oil filter (I don't remember the brand).
That's not bad ... I think Exxon oil is the same as Mobil1 - I mean it's the same company. Dino Exxon or Mobil oil costs around $4 per quart after tax in autozone and other places so it's gonna cost around $20 for the oil alone.
The reason I don't wanna use synthetic is because my car wasn't maintained well by the previous owner/s (I'm the 3rd owner) and it has 189k miles. I think he never changed oil in 5 years that he had the car - he said he was just adding some oil. According to some threads on the .org, adding synthetic oil to a high mileage poorly maintained car will trigger many problems that didn't show up using dino oil.
I understand that synthetic is better than dino, and I'm willing to spend more money for better oil but I don't wanna take any risks by switching to synthetic.
I think after using AutoRx it's safer to switch to synthetic (according to AutoRx recommendations) but it's gonna take a long time until you finish the procedure (2k miles rinse then 1500 miles more..), It's gonna take me 2 years to complete the procedure because I drive 800 miles in six months.
I used Seafoam in the crank case and brake booster line before my oil change, so I think my engine is cleaner now(the drained oil was black! while I did 800 miles on it).
If Exxon oil is ok, on my next oil change I'm gonna buy genuine Nissan filter ($12 ?) and change my oil at Mobil station again with a good filter, because you can't beat their oil price and it's including labor.
I'm gonna change my oil myself if I'm gonna switch to synthetic like WhiteShadow said , he buys it at walmart for $25 and a cheap $5 filter.

There you have it.
Sometimes removing the oil filler cap and dipstick can make it go faster.
Also, before installing the new filter, it's best to fill it with fresh oil and use a finger to coat the rubber ring on the bottom with a thin layer of oil.

If you are only putting 1600 miles a year or so on your engine I wouldn't worry about oil changes that much. Just change it once a year with whatever's cheapest.
And Exxon brand oil isn't even close to the same thing as Mobil 1. The brand isn''t signifigant, it's the fact taht any dino oil is refined from naturally occurring crude oil and synthetic is just exactly what the name implies. Synthetic is far more expensive to produce which explains why it costs 5 times as much. The "worst" synthetic is 10X bettter than the best dino oil as far as protection of wear surfaces but like I said, you aren't putting enough miles on the car to justify the cost.

I checked the oil level today (Exxon 5w30) and it looks like it's very thin and it has very light color, light yellowish like champagne color.
When I removed the dipstick I couldn't tell where the oil level is at first, because the oil was so clear and too liquid, it was flowing freely up and down on the dipstick when I was turning it to see the level.
Previously I had Shell 10w40 and it had brown color which looked ok in terms of viscosity and color.
Is this normal ?

thanx.... really helpful guys... i appreciate that... around here in delaware, poeple have the nerve to charge $30 for an oil change... so now i can save myself about $360 a year minus cost of oil and filter.. thanx..

I think I got a bit less power with the new Exxon 5w30 dino oil compared to the old Shell 10w30 oil. The weather gets colder now but I don't think it should affect performance, and I'm warming up the engine before I drive.

I went to Exxon website to check the properties of their oil; They claim that their 5w30 is rated as energy saver and has one of the highest fuel economy ratings. I drove 100 miles and didn't feel any improvement in mpg yet.

if you don't use Synthetic from DAY ONE and then you put it in with 189K on the engine you are asking for trouble. I thought I was doing the right thing and then I had oil leaks out of my valve covers because the detergents and cleaners that are in Mobil 1 and so strong they cleaned out the deposits that were in the engine and caused oil leaks where those deposits had formed over the years and I had 160K on the engine. I found that a Synthetic blend is better and you get the same performance. Just my two cents.

Not sure if the 4th gen is really different than the 5th gen when it comes to oil change. but ur better off buying the 5L mobil one with synthetic 5w30 and use .5 to flush more of the old oil out and fill 4.5 if you are changing the filter. Its always good to do it yourself, that way you know whats in your car and all. I never trust any of those places.

Changing oil is easy! If you are still new to working on your car it should take at most an hour.
There are only a few steps and tools needed also.
1. Get your jack, jackstands, ratchet, socket, oil, filter, and your favorite beverage.
2. Raise the car and put on jack stands.
3. Put socket on ratchet
4. Make sure ratchet clicky thingy is set to loosen.
5. Remove oil cap and dipstick then remove drain plug
6. Wait
7. Proceed to obtain beverage
8. Put your hands firmly around the beverage
9. Raise your hands towards your face until you make contact.
10. Proceed to drink and do not breath in while you drink.
11. Remove oil filter with hand NOT holding beverage
12. Wait
13. When no more bad oil is coming out, proceed to put on new filter with a little new oil on the seal
14. Put back the drain plug and tighten
15. Put in new oil
16. Pray you didn't over fill and that you put back the drain plug.
17. Check for a strange leakage of new oil under the car
18. If everything is dry under there, start the car.
19. Lower your car
20. Recycle oil to save environment and proceed to hug a tree.

... also ... no need for jacks, jack stands or ramps.
Simply turn the front wheels fully to the right until you hit the stop.
Front the right side of the car and accessing things from gap created in front of the wheel/tire there's ample room to access the plastic shield and mounting fasteners, drain plug and filter whilst just sitting and perhaps lying on the garage floor.
