91 Maxima SE - Bad Thermostat?

As the title say I believe my Maxima has a bad thermostat. When I let the car idle and warm up the temperature goes up to and stays at normal operating temperature and my heater pumps out some heat. When I drive down the highway the temperature gauge bottoms out and I get little to no heat. The colder it is outside the worse the problem is. I can drive down the highway for an hour then stop and let the car idle again and it eventually goes back up to normal operating temperature. My theory is the thermostat is stuck open and the cold air hitting the radiator when I drive down the highway is causing the anti freeze to get too cold. Does this make sense or does anyone think it could be something else? If I have to replace the thermostat how difficult of a job is it?

Thermostat sounds like a safe bet! Thermostat is KIND of a pain, but totally doable. I admit I'm not a good source of how because I did mine when I had the motor out, but I hear it's a bit cramped. VG 30 has it in the right side of the engine bay, follow the upper hose, Thermostat is behind the cover it attaches to, if I recall.
