Expansion valve
#2
The hard part is removing the evaporator box so that you can replace the expansion valve. You have to pull the dash as well as that big bar that goes sideways across the cab. Well, you don't actually need to remove that bar, but loosen it enough so that it can be pulled out at least a few inches.
If your compressor hasn't failed (and thus shot the "black death" all through the system), there isn't typically a need to replace the expansion valve. Of course in a perfect world you would replace everything but don't feel like you HAVE to replace the expansion valve since it's working fine presumably already.
Your system is operating fine, just low on refrigerant from a compressor leak, no? If so you will be fine just replacing the compressor and drier (you ALWAYS want a new drier anytime you open the system).
