Transmission Fluid change

I have a 94' maxi se automatic and it has almost 160k i am not the original owner of the car so i do not know if it had a transmission fluid change prior or not, my question is should i get a transmission flush and filter change or just keep it how it is i been getting mixed messages from different car mechanics.

Thank you nissan forum.

Also i checked the transmission fluid level and it was perfect also it was clear "not dirty" and it did not smell burnt.

If its clear, bright red and you cannot fault the current operation of the AT considering the distance on it then I would say leave it alone - at worst simply change the fluid if you will feel more comfortable after that but I wouldn't start buggering around with "flushes" or whatever .................... look after it (allow good warming up period and don't beat on it unnecessarily if its at all possible - ie don't eg go and do a dyno now at all) and keep the fluid bright red and at proper level and the AT should give you its best

A flush would probably be fine for a VE AT, but VG autos have been know to fail immediately after a flush. At least I've read.

The term "flushing" is more than just draining ATF and refilling the drained amount. IIRC, you can only drain 4-5 qts of ATF out of its 10 qt capacity. Auto trannies don't have contaminants (just normal stuff; little shavings and paper particles) compared to the engine that requires oil changing every 3 months. The FSM requires draining and refilling ATF every 2 yrs. Don't ever attempt to do a flush or fluid exchange in an auto, or else, you have to overhaul it in months due to seized seals.
