Anyones steering wheel wearing down?

so i noticed that when its summer and its hot the steering wheel is fine, but when my hands are wet from washing it or even in this rainy weather in california, if i touch the steering wheel the rubber starts flaking off and starts to get sticky. anyone else have that problem?

Ya know what, this happens all the time in my 4th Gen just as you said it...Your wheel wouldn't happen to be Leather Wrapped would it?

My original steering wheel was worn out. On the top the leather was coming apart and the rubber underneath was showing.

I put in a like-new steering wheel from a 240sx in it. I don't have an airbag, so it was no big deal.

that stuff coming off MIGHT not be rubber, but actually skin oils and dirt that accumulated over the years. you might find similar types of grime in the dimples on the headlight switch.

clean your hands before you drive

mine was getting worn at the top - leather roughing up, fading, sun beating at 12 oclock on the wheel. I put on a leather slip-on cover and it matches the interior pretty well

you can see it a bit here

mines not flaking, just smooth from hand rubbing and theres a few little gashes from the previous owner. Once i get a Skyline and/or a 240z i have a Sparco Volanti steering wheel ($400 for $90 because of a small cut in it that doesnt affect anything FTW) that i'm puting on the Max since i will be removing the airbag system

same here. mine isn't as nice yours, but for $10, beats the worn leather-and-rubber stock piece.
great thing is cruise controls work, still.

has anyone had luck with Katzkin or similar covers that they got to go onto the wheel well enough not to look obviously ghetto-fied?

I know Hectic was gonna make handbags out of some Katzkin products one time but i think that was seat covers instead

I actually broke down and ordered a set of wheelskins (solid on top and bottom with perforated sides), apparently they can come out really good, depending on the skills of the installler My wheel has actually developed a large "hole" on the top. Started with the bits coming off, and eventually now has a hole. Gonna put some goop on it to level it out, and then put the wheelskins over it. I wasn't crazy about how the wheelskins don't quite cover the wheelspokes, but if done properly, it can come out looking pretty good, at least close enough. I thought about doing the 240 wheel, and even later maxima wheels, but I have a working airbag and don't want to hassle with it. And trying to get anyone in my area to recover the wheel is outrageous pricing (one guy quoted me $600!!!, all labour he said)

I'll have some feedback in a week or so with pics once I get it installed. The only problem is I ordered black, but I think we need "charcoal"? Damn autobarn customer service doesn't exist, I'm trying to get the order changed

not to get OT but how hard is it to remove the airbag system? like i said i will be removing it only once i get a second car and can make my Max a nighttime/track car, but i dont want to be trying to remove the airbag and have it explode in my face

I had the same problem with the leather developing a hole at the 12 position. I bought a Wheelskins from Autobarn (no perforation). Got size AX in black. Took me about 1 hour to install, and my hands are sore now.

Here are some pics:

Good job on the Wheelskins. Looks professional and probably easier and cheaper than a replacement wheel. How much did you pay for the wrap?

It was $49.95 with free shipping. Got to me in a few days. If you want the top/bottom or sides perforated, it costs a little more. I am quite happy with it, and also not having bits of my steering wheel tear off and litter my car is nice

My car had a flat spot at the 12 position when I bought it over 6 years ago. It had a wheel cover on it at the time, and eventually I replaced it with a wheel skin. I got the 2-tone, but the color has since worn away on one side. Overall, it's a cheap fix and looks good if you take your time and do it right.

You WILL have sore hands when you are finished...beer helps.

Just finished my Wheelskins install tonite, overall pretty happy with it. I ordered 2 sets of strings/needle and did the baseball stitch, which I think looks much better and closer to stock. Looks like there's a small spot around 1 oclock that has some stretches in the leather, which I'm hoping will work out over time, but overall I'm happy. I got black with euro perf on the sides. It feels great with the added thickness over the stock leather too.

Here's a couple pics:

Did the material come precut or did you do some tailering?

^ MS, nice job with the baseball stitching. I wish I had done that now; come to think of it, I had a lot of thread left over. Also the perforated looks great!

The material is precut.

It's also stretched on there pretty tight, feels completely like a stock wheel, there is no movement whatsoever.

The wheelskins is precut and pre-punched for thread, so basically ready to sow on. When ordering, you specify what style you want (perf/non-perf/different colors etc) and also tell them you want an extra thread kit to do the baseball stitch (it's free of charge) because you need 2 needles (well not really but it will speed things up alot). Also, make sure to fix any holes or rough spots on the existing leather before putting the cover on... it will show any imperfections underneath!

When my wheel started getting nasty I just cut the cover off. Nobody even noticed it was gone.
