AC vents producing fungus smell

urgh, my AC vent is pumping fungus smell. This smell does not occur if I turn on the heater but why it only happens during AC mode? I thought both AC and heater share the same fan? Any suggestion on getting rid the smell? Is there something I can spray into the vents to make it go away? While googling I read some crazy crackers suggested using Lysol. Isn't that a little too poisonous?

I think I just got finished reading the haynes manual about that yesterday. It says that sometimes fungus grows on the evaporator core producing the smell. The warm humid enviroment is how the mold starts to grow. The smell can be eliminated by some strong aerosol disinfectant( Not lysol or your average household cleaners) that are available for automotive air conditioners at a local parts store. The most effective ones are the most expensive. There is an easy procedure to get rid of the fungus.

Their is a tube that is supposed to let water accumulated in the AC system to drain out the side of the car. I remember for the VG it was common for that tube to clog and spill onto the CPU and kill it. You might want to look into that, it may be clogged. I don't even know where that is in my car.

There is a drain on the firewall. Just above the the passenger side inner tie rod end. An easy way to tell if it is clogged is to run the AC for about a 15 min. trip, park the car, wait a while and look behind the passenger side tire on the ground for a nice wet spot. If nothing, check the drain.
