License Plate Light Substitution

Guys,

Both of my license plate lights are hosed and I can't removed them either due to nasty rust. Are there any aftermarket solutions out there that you guys have used? Last night a cop pulled me over because both light bulbs went out and right now I can't even touch them because of rust. They're just going to fall apart if mess around with it. I can throw away both light assemblies but I don't think I can replace it with OE parts because I might break the mounting bracket. Any suggestions?

I use a pair of these with a small resistor so they don't blow when voltage goes over 12v. They are actually white, not the blue in the picture.

I've had these in my car for over a year and they still work perfectly and light up the ground behind my car. I used liquid electrical tape to protect them against moisture.

Check your local parts store in the lighting aisle. They usually have small lights for this use.

If you can't find anything, the LEDs posted above would work- just need to try to disguise them some for cosmetic purposes. mount them on the bottom of the bumper above the plate and then paint the outside edge black/body color so they only shine light on the plate and would be nearly invisible.

Thanks, guys. I got impatient today so I just broke off one of the two rusty bars where the screws hold up the assembly together and I was able to change the bulbs. It's probably gonna fall off later, if it does ...oh well.

That's a good question, I'm not sure either but my ride is a 94 GXE. There are lot of cars on the road here in the US that do not have license light either and cops never bother pulling them over. I think that dumb cop just didn't like me.

Check with motorcycle shops. K&S makes "lighted license plate bolts" sold thru Western Power Sports (WPS). Any local shop should have a catalog. They run about $23.00/set
