Options for Bose speaker replacement?

I was wondering why three of the four speakers didn't work...well there are no speakers!!! Thought they worked when I test drove it...oh well...what are my options? Looks like a small amp in the back, but the speaker is gone.

Each speaker has their own amp IIRC. I would just get stock replacement speakers if I were you. Check on eBay and the 3rd gen classifieds.

Get rid of the whole bose system, go completely aftermarket, these old systems are not worth fixing. good used parts for them are almost non existent nowadays.

OK...so haven't done much audio work. It actually has a Kenwood head. So just get rid of the amp on the only remaining rear speaker and get a pair of 6 x 9 or whatever the size is? Do the amps just work in line too boost speaker output?

The bose amps are only good for the bose speakers, do not use them for aftermarket speakers, just run new wire or cut/splice into the existing wiring when you get new speakers.

yes, the rears are 6x9.

Unless the speaker itself is blown, it's the blown amps that cause the speakers to not play. If you can come across some stock speakers you can bypass the amps and run the stock speakers. I actually took apart the speakers, removed the amps, cut out the amp wiring, and modified the harness to go straight to the speaker. This way I didn't have to cut up any stock wiring (aside from cutting out/removing the blown amp wiring).

I just did this to my "new" VE yesterday, and they certainly don't sound as bad as many people have claimed. Definitely worth it for free and will tide me over until I install a 6.5" component set.

A 6.5" component set is your best upgrade if you can afford it. You'll need to make some adapters/brackets (or buy some from me) to mount the speakers to the doors or you can actually hack up the Bose unit enough and mount 6.5"s to them if you're creative enough
