locks not working
for some reason this happens sometimes on my 92 GXE, suddenly you cannot unlock/lock the doors with the numeric pad on the outside or the regular switch on the inside. when you try you can hear a click near the dash but nothing happens. the doorpad still beeps and lights up. last time it happened was last year and after a week it randomly started working. im stuck opening the front doors with the keys and locking the locks with the keys or pushing them down
is this a wiring problem?

u have a crack in ur time control unit...if u can pull it out from under the dash and open it up u will see that there is crack links in there...solder them again and u will be set for another 15 years or so

so its something i can yank out from the bottom and i dont have to remove the dash covering? the horrors i found when i removed the console and dash covers to wire up for subwoofers should never see the light of day again

you remove 1 piece of dash trim, held on by a few bolts. very easy to take off. there is a black box you can pop the timing contorl thing out. on the circuit board there is commonly a bad solder point, there should be pics in the sticky. I soldered this point and my locks started working properly, then 1 year later they acted up again, turns out a bad circuit board on the driver door switch panel, both of these parts can be picked up at junk yarks for dirt cheap.
Although last time i was at the junk yard I pulled the units from under the dash on 4 maximas, and they all had the same common point of green corrosion exact same spot on all boards. very wierd.
Ive never soldered before, and by using the sticky I bought a $12 solder iron and fixed itmyself first shot.
Also don't forget the they actual timing control unit is different for models.
Im sure the VE one is different than the VG motor, not sure about se vs gxe. luckily most maximas in junky yards are gxe anyways, for you at least
Good luck

i dont think so if there is any difference in time control unit cuz if there was then FSM would have pointed out in wiring diagram...

yes.although, I don't think they are swappable, from 3Ga to 3Gb. there were massive changes to the wiring system, probably to accomidate the ve (or the engineers found a flaw in the initial harness).
but I definitely had to change mine out. damn thing got burned up, and kept blowing fuses. (I have a thread about it somewhere...)

the units look almost the same, i believe have same plug ins, go in the same size box and are same size and all that crap.
trust me, Ive had 3 in my hand that would not work for me VE and they were pulled from VGs, I dont know what years any of the cars were as I didnt look. But I do know that I found one out of a VE and the circuit board was laid out slightly differently, I wish I took pics, but oh well.
maybe the ones that were different were the 89-91 ones like benstoked said.
Im going to try to find proof somewhere if I can and post, but I know what I saw and what they were....

it happened almost right after i washed it, that humidity may have done it though i get it washed every 1-3 days and its a rare occurrence for my locks to not work. unless the lock problem happens within a couple months, im not going to rip out the time control unit and see whats up

mine went from working to not working, to locking everytime i would unlock them ..all for a year, then i decided to fix it.
so even though its working again, hate to say it, but its just a matter of time before they start acting wierd again

my locks in my 92 arent workin either. i tried saudering some points on the time control circuit board which i thought were bad but still not working. i tried two other units out of other cars and still not working. the door lock timer is clicking but nothing happens. what else could be wrong?

Bumping an old thread.... my door locks aren't working and haven't for quite some time. I purchased a known working door lock timer (thanks James92SE), but it just clicks like my original one. Lifting the drivers/passenger lock manually will make the timer click, and using the switch on the drivers door will make the timer click.
After reading this thread, can someone tell me what the problem most likely is? The drivers door switch unit? The time control unit?
Thanks for the help...

well ive had no time to fix this issue yet lol. whats funny though is after i made this thread the keypad worked for everything but the locks, then it fully quit until a couple months ago and again it works for everything but the locks
im fine with using the key but i should try to fix this issue by August

Selling? Selling what??
I'll check the circuit board of the Time Control Unit for broken joints, but I'm pretty sure I did that when the problem first came about and didn't see anything suspicious...

just replace the time control box thats what runs the door locks on third gen max
the forth gen its the actual driver door switch. but i can tell you 99.9% sure its the time control box.
I replaced mine for the same reason.

When the door lock timer is known to be good and the locks still won't work then it's got to be your master switch on the driver door. I spent months going through timers on my black VE (and thought they were all bad) before realizing it was the master switch. That's how I wound up with so many timers and most of them turned out to be good

Problem Solved !!!! It was a crack in a soldering on the door lock timer, a drop of melted wire and fixed ! Thanks to everybody ! Now I have an additional working main door control and time control unit.

This is the reason why I asked if anyone has a internal pic of the area that needs to be repaired. I have two spare clocks and a door lock timer in the storage shed and I decided to crack them open to see if I can notice a soildered joint that needs re-soildering.
To begin with, the internals of both clocks were slightly different. Notice where the pencil is pointing to.
But the external housing of the clocks were the same. No noticeable difference on the outside
Here's the door lock timer
Now it's possible, all three of the items don't need any repair. It's possible the soildered joints are not seperating. It would have been nice to notice something, repair it, install it and see what happens.
The next step is to remove my timer and clock and see if I notice anything with them. Lets see what happens.
