second gen 5spd swap into vg auto

Does anyone know if this is possible, or is it the same transmission that's in the 3rd gens?

Different animal there mang, iirc the mounting points are all in different places on the 2nd gen trans, and the axles are not compatible with the 3rd gen body width/hubs. Also, the linkage to the gear shifter is in a different place on the 2nd gen trans.

well that's disappointing.
Found one on craigslist for $250. The owner says the motor turns over but no spark. Also been sitting for 4 years so I'm not sure about that...

I knew a guy that did a swap on a 89 maxima vg30e, that had a 87 maxima gxe and put the tranny from the 87 into the 89. It shifted good, but the power/comfort button was no use. I looked under the hood, and there was only one shift cable, not 2 like im used to seeing. By the way it was an automatic transmision. I used to own a 87 GXE and I loved it, the 5-speeds are great also. I am looking into getting one to fix up and drive. As they are very reliable, and the window regulators are not that big of an issue.
